OK. My search of the forums has not revealed an exact description of this problem. Please help because I'd like to have some idea of the issue before taking my X into the shop.
My X (2000 Ltd v10 65k miles) is making a rubbing/rattling combination noise while accelerating (and decelerating) only in 1st or 2nd gear. Once I hit 3rd the noise goes away. If i switch to neutral from 1st or 2nd the noise goes away while coasting. I do not hear the noise while idling in park and revving the engine. The noise frequency matches rpms.
I first noticed the sound about 1500 mile ago after a long trip to Florida (from Illinois). Coincidentally, I had the trans fluid changed before the trip. It's hard to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. At first, I thought it was from the rear but now I think it is from the front/middle. I have confirmed that the u-joints are fine, plus, no clunking.
The noise is gradually getting worse and I need to take care of it before it rears its ugly head. I just want to be armed with some knowledge so I dont get taken for a complete trans rebuild if it is not needed.
If it is the tranny, does anyone know of a shop you would swear by in northern Illinois/ southern Wisconsin? Or should I let the dealer at it? No ext warranty. Thanks for any advice.

My first guess would be a heat shield on the motor. There are several heat shields on the motor. The welds have probably broken lose on one of them.

I sure wish i could pinpoint it exactly but my first thought with the symptoms would be Torque Converter or it could be located in the valve body. Did you change the fuild/filter or did you have a service perform it for you?
Sometimes a shop can easily overfill/underfill which both could cause problems.
I'd suggest have a Transmission shop like Cottman or AAMCO do a free diagnostic on your Excursion as they may be able to determine if the problem is engine or Transmission related Hope that helps some,
Bill

Thanks for your quick responses. I'm glad to hear possible causes other than transmission.
I have not noticed decrease power/performance but I have noticed a decrease in gas mileage (according to the Ford trip monitor). I usually avg 11mpg but now see 9.5mpg more often.
I had a local shop change the trans fluid. I cant help but wonder if that change aggravated an existing issue. It does make sense that a change in fluid would possibly exacerbate a hidden problem even if it is new fluid.
I will look into the free diagnostic from Cottman or AAMCO. Thanks.
Are the heat shields easy to check? How do you suppose these may be the cause of the noise?

My concern is your loss of power and fuel economy. This typically means the torque converter is not locking up correctly causing a "slip" (very much like if you were to slightly engage the clutch on a manual transmission vehicle and drive normally). Engine RPMs are a tad higher because of the slipping...causing reduced fuel economy. Power is down because you don't have full lock in the torque converter.
I'd get it looked at...also verify that the shop you took it to put in the correct tranny fluid (check the invoice).

Just had the SAME EXACT PROBLEM on my 2000 X LTD w/ 70K miles.
Problem is the FRONT HUB ASSEMBELY (mine was the left side).
I also first thought a heat shield or brake dust shield. Also, I couldn't pinpoint the right or left side. It was intermittant and drove me nuts for 4 weeks, until it wouldn't stop making noise and pulling to the left hard.
TOTAL COST: $850 at a Ford Dealership. |

Thanks for the response. I am curious about the specifics. Can someone please elaborate a little for me? Thanks.

Thanks for the response. I am curious about the specifics. Can someone please elaborate a little for me? Thanks. | Hub assembly will mean the 4x4 hubs. But if they are bad, it won't magically disappear after 2nd gear -- you'd be hearing it in every gear...even if the trans it out of gear and you're coasting. My guess is that the above problem is not what you are experiencing as you've indicated that it only happens to you in 1st/2nd gear.
Look for a dealer in your area that deals in fleet truck sales. I've found these types to generally be the best when it comes to servicing my Excursion. The dealership I bring my X to only deals only in light truck sales -- no cars, thus only light truck mechanics on staff.
