Ok, not this is not giving me any reassurance that this is a hot or miss problem. My 2003 x just rolled 1900 miles tonight. 1 set of pads, and 2 sets of rotors in 12K? How many times have you turned the rotors before you replaced them?

Which rotors are worse, the fronts or the rears. I would speculate the fronts, just due to the heavier load placed on them during braking.

What is the preferred brake pad for the x? I have used Wagner Thermo Quiet pads on both my 99 Explorer and my 94 3/4 Ton GMC. Both have had excellent results. But these results have been on vehicles without recurring rotor problems.

I know what Ford says in their warranty information about not covering brakes, but that should apply to normal wear and tear. Has anyone been able to convince Ford that this is abnormal (read premature) wear and had them replaced at Ford's expense?

Here is another idea, what about heat treating the rotors before they are installed on the vehicle? If you could quench them and maintain the profile tolerance, or remachine the face, this might be an alternative to Ford's crap rotor, or and aftermarket item like ART. The only problem I see with this idea is possibly crystallizing the metal, and making it brittle and useless. I would be interested to find out exactly what grade steel (do the use steel in Mexico?) that these rotors are made out of, and what the Ford spec is.

I have been concerned about the brakes on the x from the beginning. I hope my experience is better than some I have read about.

Anyone interested in filing a NHTSA claim for the brakes on the x?

ART rotors are TRW rotors that have been cyrogenically treated. This makes metal more dense and able to absorb and transfer heat better. They are also slotted to help expel gasses and brake dust better.

Mine have been on my truck for many miles and I wouldn't own another Excursion without them.

_______

On another note... 12K seems like pretty low mileage for your rotors to warp.

How would you describe your style of driving?

New to the Forum!!! The main reason I found this great site were the continuous problems with my 00 4X4 LTD X. I have changed front Calipers, Pads(2), Turned rotors(2) changed Steering stabilizer to a Rancho and 285 Dueler Revo. I also had all four lock actuators replaced and a new power steering pump(2). As I was reading, it could be advantageous for the member of the Forum to jointly send a letter to Ford with a compilation off issues and see what kind of reaction we get.

I’m glad to find this great site and the opportunity of exchanging ideas and solve my “X” problems.

Ah!!! I will never sell my “X’

I have had no problems with the brakes on my 2000 X. I occasionally tow a 5,500 pound horse trailer.

I bought it used with 18K miles. I now have 55K and I have not touched the brakes. Obviously, I don't know if they turned the rotors and replaced the pads before I bought it. But I just had it in for service and they said that the pads were due to be replaced at the next service.

I plan to replace them with the ART parts.

I am interested in going with the ART rotors but I have only 1 concern. Can a piece of rock or gravel get stuck in the grooves. Has anyone ran across this problem?
