I want to thank everyone who has helped me to pick out the "must do" items of work for my 2001 PSD Excursion. Uprgrade that are underway include: 4" turbo back exhaust, Rancho RS9000 adjustable shocks, Rancho steering stablizer, Hellwig anti-sway bar, K&N cold air intake, full Putco SS tube grille, Euro headllight & cornerlight assemblies. I figure that is at least a good start. Oh yea, yanking off that roof rack too!
Here's my question. I have my new Hellwig sway bar. I figuring it makes the most sense to install the sway bar and the new shocks at the same time, right?
Another question - (mainly directed to Eric Long if you see this). In your How To install article for the sway bar, which is a great tool to help with this installation, because as you mention, the Hellwig directions are terrible, you mention in the beginning of your install that you raised your X up on jack stands. However, the Hellwig directions state that the vehicle should remain on the ground with its normal working load on the suspension in order to insure proper installation. Did you install yours with the rig raised to make it easier going, then make adjustments after it is down on the ground?
Thanks again for all your help. |

Hi Paul, seems you have all the initial modifications lined up just as I would
It doesn't matter which you install first shocks or Swaybar but both are must do's
My opinion is to install the swaybar with your truck on level ground as possible but if you desire more clearance for the belly back er up onto a set of ramps up equal height

The advantage of installing the swaybar & shocks at the same time is that they both use the same mounts on the axle, and you have to remove the mounts temporarily to get the swaybar on. If you had to do one before the other, do the swaybar first. Otherwise, you'll find yourself disconnecting the lower shock mounts when you install the swaybar later.
In regards to jacking it up onto stands, the only thing that matters is that the suspension remain compressed during the swaybar installation. Doesn't matter if you're working on the ground or 6 feet in the air. Just position the jackstands beneath the axle and you'll be fine. |

Eric you know there's lift kit/,tire/wheel combos that easily make your X that high to eliminate the jack stands
Look at that snow around your place

Hah, don't I know it! Had 9" of lift on my Bronco. Working underneath it was a breeze...I could literally sit up! Not with the X, though.

That was a few years ago. Not much snow left after the weekend we had here! Although I'm hoping for more...the snow reveals all of the dog poop in the yard. Our little pup is quite the poop factory. In the summer time, I just mow it over!

Hey Paul...or anyone else,
Rancho has a few selections for the steering stabilizer-
RS 5000 Stabilizer Replacement
RS 5000 Stabilizer with mounting kit
RS 5000 Stabilizer with mounting kit for Super Duty
Which one do I buy for my 2003 Limited V10 4x4? Their website does not offer any help.
Thanks.

Many of the Excursion owners I see go with the RS5410 (price unknown) or the ProComp ES2000 #222560 which comes with a spacer and replacement hardware which is like $30 at 4WheelParts..
