I'm happy enough with my V10, but I do find myself coveting the PSD. My dad has a F250 with the PSD and it is pretty sweet. Looooooooots of power. I found this X used and the dealer really wanted to get rid of it. That's how I ended up with the gasser. I don't pull anything and don't drive a lot, so its not a huge issue for me. I do have three kids and I have appreciated being able to order fast food without turning off the engine.
If I was going to buy a new one, I'd probably get the PSD. It would make for a great family hauler. I'm smitten with the new 6.0. It is much quieter and should get even better mileage, but I wouldn't buy one this year. Maybe one of the last 2004 models with the 6.0 would be a hot ticket.

I thought I really wanted a diesel, but wanted the newer more efficient diesel. Since the new 6.0 is too new to be the guinea pig, and I can't afford a brand new one, I purchased a 2002 with 12K miles (Just like new) with the V10. I pull a 4000# boat and was tickled at how well it pulls this boat!
Did I say I couldn't be happier? Now, with the diesel prices being 10 - 13 cents higher per gallon than 87 octane, I feel better.
Some day, I hope to upgrade to a larger boat that will be approx. 8000#'s. But I think the way the V10 Excursion handles 4000#'s, it will do fine.
I will have the option down the road to trade in for the diesel if I feel I really do need it.
No argument that the diesel is the bomb! But, practically the V10 is a very powerful engine and does an excellent job as stated by other owners as well.
I am personally getting better than 16mpg on the highway at 70mph and just this weekend, got 12.5 mpg pulling on rural highways with some traffic and lights pulling the 4000# boat. This would make recovery of a diesel costs way over 100,000 miles, so I am not unhappy with the mileage at this time. |
