I'll take a shot at number 2, if the sound goes away when you lock the hubs it is the spindle bearing. This is the bearing the stub shaft rides on when the 4wd is not engauged. When you engauge the 4x4 this locks the stub shaft to the wheel, thus the spindle bearing no longer turns. From what I have read on thedieselsite.com, it is not too hard to change out. Just a bit harder then doing a break job. It is important to get it done soon. If you wait too long you will groove the stubshaft and have to replace it also which will start costing some big $$$

I have not done this job yet. I just have a sound coming from the front end that I cannot tell if it is a bearing or road noise from the tires. Since the sound changes when I drive on different roads I am assuming it is tire noise, but I never noticed it before. I am thinking of getting the tires rotated and ballanced, hopefully that will help.

Picked upi the truck from trip #6 to the shop. This time they did the passenger side spindle bearing & stub shaft. I kinda tols it was teh passenger side to begin with.

Well, had it checked out at a reputable, long standing local front end shop last week and they told me it was due to worn "hub and axle seals". The spindles inside the outer hub looked fine but once you looked inside the hub from below, with weight off the front end it was painfully obvious where the front drive shafts entered the wheel hub that it was pretty sloppy.

It's in the shop today, and I'm hoping to get out for around a grand.

will let you know.

I understand this is common at around 100K to 120k miles for 4x4 X's....and I'm at 114K.

The mechanic shop owner says he had a later model F250 4x4 and had same thing happen at around 58,000 miles. He said he seldom used 4x4, kept stock wheels on it and tires, kept it in alighnment, but he did say he lived out away from DFW in the country and drove 85 MPH on the highway alot and this must have been the reason, in his mind.

FYI

I'm having him slap in my 203 T-stat while he's got it in the shop, too.

Since the ball joints on these rigs are good for about 100K (give or take 20-30k), the replacement of hub and axle seals is mandatory. Most people probably don't experience this problem as the ball joints tend to go sooner rather than later...at least from what I have seen. I do know that my seals all appeared to be in good shape when I replaced the ball joints at 130k.

I'll be interested to hear in the results after you get the X back from the mechanic. Nice to find someone who knows how to diagnose a problem. Let's hope he's right!

Hi Bill,
Hi neighbor from over here from in greater downtown Rendon
(or close to there since I am in a subdivision in the country )

what's the name of the shop - our 4x4 has been making a SLIGHT noise from the front left forever....

Grand Prairie Ford basically ignored it (like I'm finding out they did on many of my request)
MAYBE it's supposed to do that being 4x4, but I'd like to get it checked out for my second 50K miles

The shop that did the initial diagnosis does not do the repairs, but are very experienced. It's Buck's Truck Spring & Alignment ( maybe not the exact name). They've been around for 35 years or so.

The are located just northwest of Downtown Cowtown. Go north on Henderson out of downtown a block or two, the take a left at the light onto White Settlement Rd. They are down a couple of short blocks off to the left on a side street ( don't recall the street name but very easy to find actually).

The guy that does the light truck work is named Bill, an older skinny feller that's been doing this work since 1969. They checked mine carefully for about 20 minutes and didn't charge a thing. They do mostly work on 18 wheelers, but do 3/4 ton trucks also, and they have rebuilt a front end on an old 1970 F250 I had a few years ago, very reasonable.

Good luck
