I just got a call from the Dealer. While fixing some other things (fodder for other posts) I asked yet again about if there was a fix for the racks. They actually called ford this time and yes, FORD is aware of the problem and has a "fix" for it. The service guy told me that I needed to bring my racks in and they would install a rubber strip under the racks so that they would not be rubbing on the roof. ????? Great "fix"? Can you say band-aid!
Now the rubber will wear on the roof and not the "rack".
I was discussing this with some buddies and we felt they couldn't make the racks any higher due to the height of the vehicle already. My 2002 is listed at 80.2" with the racks. Isn't that VERY close to the standard garage door? No worry to me I have 8'.

Why don't you just take them off until you need to use them?
I put self-adhesived velco (soft side) on the bottom of my rails where the rails come in contact with the roof.

Ken,
I have had them in the rafters of my garage since I bought it. I keep asking ford if they are aware of the problem and finally they said yes...
I found their "fix" somewhat humorous . I was expecting something to raise the bars up above the roof, not something that will decrease the airspace between the rack and the roof.
I'll get them "fixed" and they'll go up in the rafters again until I need them.
The dealer gave me a Explorer to use while the X was in the shop this last time. I look at it and wondered if there was another vehicle that ford produced that used the same type of rack as the Excursion but had more height??? It sure aint the Explorer! It would seem odd if that rack was unique to the X.

the cross bars on my roof rack are shedding the paint like a snake and this adds to the wind noise. has any one noticed this. 2000 x |

Andy,
I've thought the same thing.
I thiunk the Expy has rack towers (the part that goes into the roof rack) that would wourk but the cross bars are too short. I've always wanted to get a hold of one to see if the Excursion cross bars would mate up with the Expy towers. If so, it would be a cool fix! I just do not know anyone with an Expy.

We remedied the problem by just replacing the rack with a Con-Ferr rack . Yeah, I know some of ya don't like that look, but I think it looks pretty damn sweet~ especially on a lifted Exco. Just my .02 |

I noticed the roof rack problem only a couple days after I purchased my 2004 Excursion. One dealership looked at it and accidentally broke off one of the handles on the crossbar. A second dealership pulled the works and has a new roof rack on order from Ford after seeing the rubbing. I do not know if the new roof rack will be different or not. If not, I am not sure what to do. At the moment, the dealership polished out the light scratches that had already formed in the couple days of driving, but this is not something that can be done often. I value my clearcoat. Obviously, if the replacement roof rack is a different design, I will let everyone here know. |

One quick note: I noticed that the underside of the current racks on my 2004 Excursion already have a rubber strip applied to them. It didn't help at all. |

Love the look of the Con-Ferr rack on the X, but I am going with a Surco rack . They are bigger (50"x84") Taller (5") lighter ( aluminium) costs alittle less ( about$480.00 w/o shipping). If and when I get back to work.
