My 2002 Excursion V10 37,000 miles is at the dealer getting inspected. Tech just called me to inform me that I need brakes and rotors all the way around. Rotors can't be cut becuase their "heat checked".

I understand warped but what exactly does "heat checked" mean? Anyone familiar with that term? But the good news is it's only $909 dollars to replace the rotors and brakes!

According to the service tech, "these excursions are really cheaply made", "the problem is they try and keep them light". What outstanding customer service, I only bought two excursions from them in the past three years, and my brother bought one from them too.

ART is the way to go? Everyone agree with that? Anyone tried Frozen Rotors www.frozenrotors.com

Oh, by the way the fog lights that have water in them, "they're a piece of crap too", but you'll have to replace them becuase in PA if it's a factory equipped item, it has to work for inspection. I'm pretty sure that's not true, but I'm off to research it.

Thanks for listening to me piss and moan. I'm funny that way, I have about a $100,000 of ford vehicles and some little snot is telling me, "they're really pieces of crap" as I'm sure he get's in his Hundai and drives back to his mom's house.

If I didn't think it'd hurt so much, I'd punch the wall right now.

The term "Heat Checked" relatively means your rotors(usually the front set) have cracks on the rotor surface and they are not turnable, best bet is a new set.

I'll purchase the ART's based on they are well known and come recommended here(subscriber discount too!) and in many other forums. The frozen rotor brand I've seen floating around on the net but know of no one that purchased a set to get their feedback.

No worries about having to vent about repair/maintenance issues here as I'm sure we'll all come to that point somewhere along the line

I believe Eric replaced his stock rotors with ART's and he really likes them,he may chime in with his feedback and the total costs, here's the ART Rotor & Brake Pad Install article

Don't forget it's the weekend

DoubleX,

If you are capable of installing rotors/pads yourself, buy a set of the ART's for all 4 corners and install them on your own for less than the dealer wants for labor and OEM pads/rotors.

The ARTs provide better stopping and are less-prone to warping. Mine still became warped, but the trick is to keep the lug nuts equally torqued down to 165 ft-lbs.

The OEM rotors never faired well with me, regardless of lug nut torque. They'd always warp. The ARTs are working quite nicely now that I've had them turned. The improved braking is nice, too.

I don't have any experience with other types of rotors. The SuperMotors subscriber discount will get you 10% off a set of ARTs, too, so there's some additional savings for ya. We've got another set of discounts coming up from Factory Tech Transmissions as well.

Can't help you on the fog light issue...I've got a vintage 2000 model that didn't come with fog lights!

Ack....
svc techs that fall into the "arrogant incompetent" range drive me up the wall too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
not all are like that - but I've run into too many myself !

doubt seriuosly that your state would have a law about water in the lights... but who knows - some of our legislators have VERY little common sense :-(

FYI, i have two of the stock fog lights in the garage...
when I put on my piaa's they blocked the fogs and so I moved them down to the bottom of the bull bar...
only problem is that I snapped the mounting on one of them they were so low...
the light housing is fine, but the "ears" are snapped...

I used epoxy to put it back together once, but they're still too low...
here is a pic of them in their better days :
