Well its time for me to change my own oil. The dealer changed it at 5000, no charge. I am now at 10,000 miles and want to change my own oil. I used to have 2000 Ex with a v10 and generally knew my way around gas engines.
Where can I get instructions for my 6.0 turbo . I have a book I bought on the 2000 v10 but that does me no good. I am also concerned about draining the oil, my little catch pan was for about 5 quarts. I hear this engine takes 15. what do I use to catch the old oil.
Thanks,
Mark |

Here's a couple Illustrations of the major components on the 6.0L engine, the Oil filter will be on top forward part of your engine rather than the common location underneath next to the oil pan.
The 6.0L will take about 14 quarts with filter even tho the manual says 15.
Stop in at any Autozone,Napa,Pep Boys,Walmart to purchase a 15+ quart oil drain pan,one that has a funnel on it for filling up 1 gallon bottles is best.
To make draining the oil pan easier and cleaner I suggest a Fumoto Drain Valve from DieselSite ask for Bob or Sheryl Bill

Thank you, What oil do you recommend? Also in the past I used an oil treatment called prolong, my brothers swearby it and they keep their cars for 150,000 plus. It says it can be used with diesels but it would be expensive. any thoughts?

Oil treatment? You won't be needing that at all Our engines are designed and built to last over 200k before a rebuild is warranted.
Oil wise you can't go wrong with Chevron Delo 400 or Shell Rotella which is available at Autozone,Wally world and Tractor Supply Co.
I had read a couple of oil analysis tests done on another site and had shown the Walmart "Supertech" scored the best so I picked up enough for my next oil change and the price was worthy Oil filters you can go wrong with Motorcraft & WIX as they are indentical in filter structure right down to the shrink wrap Bill

Hey I know this is a PSD page, but as a V-10 gasser needeing to do the first change since I bought this truck I have a question on topic. The book says 5-20. Is this necessary? I like to use the Wally World oil as well and they have the 5-30 in the big jugs, but not 5-20. Whats the difference? Amsoil web site said it is no problem to change. Is this true? In the past I always used Valvoline and changed every 3K and the engines never needed work or used more that a quart/3k after 150k+. My car for work I change every 5K with the wally world oil. I am currently at 140k and use about 1quart/3k. I have not noiced much of a change when I extend the milage and switched oil.
BTW I bought this truck for the room, safty, and the need to tow. I towed with it the first time last weekend. Pulled the 30 foot TT just fine. I needed to hit the brakes hard 1x on the interstate and that went well also. I Plan on getting the sway bar and Bilisteens all the way around in the near future. I should be set then. I use a standard WD hitch 10k/1k set up. I saw no need for a 3K Hensley set up. Milage was about 7 on the interstate at 70-75 MPH. I hit 80 once without realizing it while passing an 18 wheeler. I was getting about 7.5 on the two lane at 60 mph. Over all the old 3/4 Burb with a 454 can not compare to the power/stopping/ride/ and general ease of this trip. We will be heading to the Black hills later this summer. A trip I did not want to do with the old truck.

According to Ford the 5W-20 is to meet the newer CAFE requirements thus why they spec that oil and supposed to be better for mileage thus to keep the federal mandates happy.
You should also be able to locate Motorcraft or other brand 5W20 dino also at Autozones and O'Reilly's if they are in your area.

The Fumoto drain valve is a must. I love mine. I run Amsoil Series 300 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy duty oil in my 7.3L PSD. Change the filter every 5,000 miles and change the oil every 10,000 miles.
I bought a large drain pan from Autozone. It must hold 18-20 quarts as there's a little room to spare when the PSD's emptied out.
Be sure to use a screwdriver to punch a hole in the bottom of the oil filter to drain that out as well, otherwise you'll have a mess on your hands when you unscrew the filter.

Since we are discussing synthetic oil for the psd I have been wondering lately if you can reuse synthetic oil in the psd? I seem to remember about ten years ago there being a discussion about reusing synthetic oil after letting it set and waiting for the particulates to precipitate out. Does anyone practice this? Is it advisable? I did some googling and wasn't able to find much.
Also, is anyone running a by-pass filter and able to speak of the benefits?

How about the 7.3L? Will it take 15 qts as the manual says? I recently traded my V10 Ex on a 03 EB 7.3L. I just changed the oil in the 03 and oil level slightly above cross hatch with 15 qts of Shell rotella T 15W40. I used FL 1995 filter and primed with1qt out of total. Is this OK? Any other suggestions from the experienced PSD owners. After 5 years finally got the diesel.

| K Bigs,
My 7.3L PSD takes 15 quarts. I too prime the oil filter with oil...otherwise the diesel chokes up a bit when you first start it after the oil change.
Just keep an eye out for oil leaks...other than that, not much to it!
