Anyone ever seen this or have this problem?
I have a 2000 Excursion Limited and both my front buckets lean to the right (passenger side). The driver seat seems to lean much more than the passenger seat, so much that it interferes with the center console.
I'm thinking I can just shim the seats, but I'm wondering is this is a common issue or just my vehicled.
Thanks. |

Are you the original owner, and are you ... er, ummm ... large in stature? I ask because a buddy recently had me weld a bunch of broken sections of a seat frame for a Jeep Commander, Commanche, Commander ... whatever ... it was a Jeep. A previous "large" owner had really put that seat frame through the mill. If your seat is leaning now, shimming it up on one side does not fix the problem.
You could shim it until it's level, and the (supposedly) cracked seat frame will continue to crack until it's completely broken ... and it may let go at a time that causes you to have a collision with another vehicle, or worse, with a pedestrian. Go to an automotive upholstery shop and get the real problem fixed.
Oops! Where are my manners? WELCOME to the forum. |

I am not the original owner, but I am not large in stature. I had the same thought though.
Just seems weird because the seats has full range of motion without any binding and the brackets are square to the floorpan. Must be something up inside the seat or the seatback that is out of square.
I guess I will have to pull the seats and take them to an upholstery shop to see what's going on. I have to fix the radiator anyway, so it will be a good time while the truck is out of service. |

Well I've only had my X for about 2 months, but do notice a driver's side lean towards the console. Can see it best looking in from the rear hatch. don't know if it was there before I bought it or not.
I'm 6-5" and 290 lbs....so I coulda done it I reckon.
(I guess I either need to drop some poundage or get the seatback welded, huh?)
Thx |

The X is a fitting vehicle for a guy of your size!

Well, stripped both seats down to the frame and there is nothing structurally wrong (even had uphostery shop confirm for me).
Stripped back the carpeting and cannot find anywhere where the floor appears buckled or weak so I'm not sure it's the floor either.
Which now leaves me completely baffled.
I did use some shims just to see what would happen and I can get the seat pretty close to where I think it should be, but that still doesn't fix whatever the root cause is.
Any other ideas from anyone? |

You're not the only one baffled over this condition. I'm at a loss to suggest anything more. Anyone else got a clue? |

At this point I would have to say that you need to compare it with another Excursion. There really aren't many other variables to rule out.
Is the seat leaning or was it repositioned towards the center of the vehicle so that it is now interfereing with the center console? Is your main concern that it is leaning or that you can't correctly access/open the center console?
FWIW, here's an old, overhead pic of my center console. You can't see the seats 100%, but it gives a good indication of clearance between the seat and the center console:
Does yours look similar with regards to the clearance?

I guess I have 2 concerns.
1. Is the lean. I am one of those AR, perfectionist types so this is really bugging me.
2. Without being shimmed the drivers seat armrest does interfere with the proper operation of the center console lid. The lid, when opened, rubs up against the armrest and shifts slightly to open all the way. Eventually, this is going to damage that hinge and put wear marks on the side of the armrest. The lean on the passenger seat is not too bad and would not concern me if I can manage to get the driver's seat corrected.
Last night I went so far as to take the seats out of my '01 F350 Lariat, which has the same exact bucket seats. Much to my disappointment they also lean right w/o shims. So, there has to be something wrong with the floor/mounting points, but I can't see where there is any damage and neither could the uphostery shop. I guess my next stop will be a body shop to see what they think about it.
Starting to feel like I'm on a wild goose chase here. |
