hello all. i have a 2000 v10 4x4 and sometimes when i start it warm or cold it makes a grumbling noise for about 2 seconds then lets out a loud thud which seems to be coming from the passenger side under the hood somewhere. i would be really concerned but i used to own a 2003 ford f350 6.0 diesel that did the same thing from brand new. it is also very eratic. it happens only when it wants to not when the hood is open!!! go figure.
anyone elses trucks do this and what is it caused by?

--Thump may be the heater blend door shutting--sometimes sounds like you ran over a tree limb but you are sitting still.
Growl??-I reprogrammed my computer with a Hypertech device--the starter will sometimes throw an extra spin after disengaged and engine running---I have no clue as to why. Hope this helps.

David's observation is correct. The thumping has to do with your vent/heater door. Mine makes similar sounds if I turn it to the "off" position when the vehicle isn't running (hard to hear it over the PSD, when idling).
