Only today, 3 weeks after setting up with the 80 HP middle range superchips microtuner program, my X is acting strange. been doing fine until late today.

The throttle response seems to act really erratic at low RPMs while cruising along on flat road at around 30 - 35 MPH. Wants to surge up for a sec, then drop down and all the while I'm keeping the pedal motionless just to maintain even speed. Other times it seems like it wants to die, but doesn't. I noticed when I'm coasting up to a red light from 35 mph speedsor so, if I shift into nuetral the engine revs up for about a second then settles down to where it should be.

Haven't seen any probs at highway speeds, just around town on slower roadways.

Do these tuner programs have to be unloaded and then reloaded for some reason? Do they "go bad"?

I thought maybe a bad fuel filter, but maybe not? Doesn't seem like a CPS issue either, with my very limited knowledge.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Bill,

For grins, what does it do if you unload the microtuner program?

Not sure how many miles are on your X, but if you take it into a dealer, make sure to remove the tuner program to protect any warranty remaining on your X.

CPS problems are pretty obvious -- the PSD simply dies and won't start again, or takes a while to start again (after it sits). What you are describing sounds like something else...unfortunately, I don't know what. I would remove the tuner program first at least to eliminate one of the variables and then go from there.

I've got a 115K mile unit here...but the motor has a full warrantee until Dec of this year as it's a ford remanufactured one replaced at 78,000. So if it has to go to the dealer I'll notch it back down to stock.

And that's a good idea, to reprogram back to stock to get rid of one possible culprit.

Will try that.

Thanks

Bill,
Did returning the program to stock solve the surging?
Am very curious, as my X is same year and similar mileage as yours.
I put the Super Chips tuner on mine a few weeks ago and have been running the less than 6000# tow safe mode. Really liked that way this changed the shifting of the trans. Shifts are very smooth and at lower speeds / RPM’s than stock. Have your tried this mode?

I have not noticed any fuel mileage increase yet and I have been trying to keep the RPM’s bellow 2k and just all around take it easy. Still getting around 14.5 to 15.2 mpg around town. Is this normal? I have noticed that since adding the Super Chips the Lie-o-Meter has gone as high as 24.7 mpg while on a 100-mile trip where the speed limit was 50mph. Filled up and checked it and sure enough 15.2 mpg. Have also done a 150 mile round trip where I was running between 75 and 80 with 6 adults up and down hills and got almost 15 on that trip. Keep seeing claims of 18-19 MPG wondering what else I need to do. Cleaned and re oiled my K&N at the same time as installing the Super Chip programmer.

I haven't yet returned to the stock program, still running in the middle 80 HP? setting, but the erratic surging either hasn't happened much anymore, or I tend to not notice it. I think i like the raw power I get when trying to get up to higways speeds or pass a slow moving vehicle too much.

I was getting around 15-16 in town, and around 18 on the highway, but this is Texas and not that hilly where I live, as compared to your neck o' the woods.

On highway trips I understand to get the 18-19 or even 20PMGs you have to be on fairly flat terrain and keep it around 60-65, and a little under 2000RPMs. I have a hard time doing that on a 3 hour trip to anywhere here in TX when this thing cruises so well at 75 -80.

I need to try that tow mode, as I wish the overdrive, when driving easily around town, would click in somewhere less than the 45 MPH level like it does now, and did as well on the stock setting I had initially.

Hey Bill
That was a REAL pet peeve with the 4 speed on my 02 7.3L....
even though you may not be accerlerating it wouldn't ever shift into 4th under 45 mph...
I tried everything...
sometimes (if I could!)
I would speed up past 45...
it would drop into 4th and then I could slow down to the speed limit and,
if I was careful,
it would stay in 4th....

I mean why have gobs of torque available and not use it by getting into high gear as soon as possbile (unless you were racing !)
