Bill,

From where to where should the lines be insulated? I have the insulation sitting in my garage (and have had it for quite a while) but haven't understood which point in the lines needs insulation. Based on the schematic, is it between numbers 8 and 10 that need to be insulated?

Eric I insulated the cold line leading from just under the rear part of the front wheel well all the way back to the rear auxiliary climate control unit.

You'll have to drop down the quad set of lines(Cold charge,Hot Charge and the pair of coolant lines) which is held up by 4-5 grey colored plastic retaining brackets.

I dropped em low enough to give me working room to remove the plastic wire loom covering and room to fit up the insulation and make the necessary cuts for a snug fit on the turns and angles going over the rear axle.

I then cut many 5"-6" lengths of the aluminum duct tape and tightly went around the insulation leaving none of it exposed but making sure the insulation made full snug contact on the cold charge line.

After taping the insulation is complete I then re-installed the wire loom covering to protect the newly insulated line from road debris, there may be some spots that'll require a length of tape or two to keep the loom covering secure.

Take the brackets and remount the line set back up to the truck body.

I added some more PHOTOS that'll have some details,if more are needed let me know

Heya John, yeah the cheepo thin insulation is sorta tack glued to the inside of the wire loom but not much of a problem removing. The new insulation is gonna take up some room in the wire loom so the old stuff has gotta come out.

Wish I was a little closer to your residence as I'd gladly swing by to help out

You have my phone # if you need to contact me.

Guys,

Replace your existing valve with this one:

http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=21

to shut off all coolant thru the heater core. It's really easy to install.

Pretty much the same shut off valve that's in there

Bill,

You may well be correct, the new valve looks just like the old one. However, Bob Riley from Dieselsite pretty much quoted the same info as is posted on his website advertisement, to wit:

"Even if you have a factory installed valve - which some 2002-2003 vehicle owners my notice - we have still seen benefits from this installation because the factory provided valve does not shut off all the way."

So the question that begs answering is - does the factory-installed valve shut off all the way? I have no idea; I just took Bob at his word. However, if I just replaced one working part with a duplicate part, then I'd like to return it to him & spend the $37 on something else (hmmm, chip down payment?)

Anyway, thanks for any insight you can provide.

Mark

A couple summers back when I started scoping out the AC system and how I could improve upon it I found that yes some hot coolant does get by and make it through the front heater core when the dial is at "Max AC" setting. If Bob says it completely stops the coolant flow and re-directs it I'll take his word 100% based on the retailer/buyer relationship we've had for almost 3 years now

I have not once questioned his knowledge or experience with Powerstroke Diesels

I might look into purchasing the valve he has to replace the stock one on our Excursion long as it's a straight swap less new clamps of course

Bill,

My experience with Bob Riley has been very positive as well. Never found any reason to dispute his expertise or products in any way. Even so, my X still doesn't seem to push enough cold air to offset the 85 -90 degree outside temps we've been seeing. The refrigerant levels are fine, just doesn't seem to blow as cold as I like (which is about meat locker temperature).

You mentioned installing a pusher fan to extract heat from the AC condenser when in traffic, etc. What fan did you use & where did you mount it? How is it wired?

This sounds like a terriffic idea; anything we can do to get that refrigerant back to liquid state will absolutely make it cool faster. Now you Texan's know what heat really is, don't y'all? It may not seem like us frozen chosen up here in Minnesocold should have to worry about it, but summer gets really humid (comparatively speaking - hehehe) and the big X can be a sweatbox.

Thanks for your help.
