I want to replace the OEM shocks on my 00 X 4X4. I do not want to spend the money on the in-cab adjustable set up and I do very little towing. Some suggestions to smooth the ride for under $400? Thanks guys. |

Andy,
I got the adjustable Rancho 9000's WITHOUT thei n cab controller and am very pleased with them...
some say the rsx's are good too...
some like the KYB's
I think what it boils down to is ANYTHING is betta than stock - and some are "MORE betta" !

I have the Rancho RS9000X shocks without the in cab controller for the past few years and have been pleased with them.
There's also Bilstein brand shocks that receive rave reviews and stay under $400.

I went with the Bilsteins. Been on for 2 years so far and act like they are new.
The Bilsteins are also lifetime warranty and rebuildable.

I have the RS9000's (before the RS9000x's came out). I rarely adjust them, but I know it's there if I need it. I'll be towing over the 4th and will definitely adjust the rears then.
What I also like is as the shocks get worn in, I can bump the setting up a level to stiffen up the ride again.

I got the Bilstiens online for $65/ea at eshocks.com....delivered to the front porch a few days later.
I don't tow anything, just carry myself around the highways of the DFW area, and these did make a noticeable difference.
The Helwig rear sway bar from JC Whitney for about $175, also made a huge difference in handling.
I've got my LANDYOT Radius Rods just haven't yet got my son to sit still long enough to install them for me. I must say the Radius Rods are precision and high-quality fabrications, too bad no one can see them after they are in place and doing their job.

I put on The Edelbrock Performer IAS; about $70 each delivered. These bad boys were REALLY stiff when first installed; about 6000 miles later they have broken in and are pretty amazing. They adjust themselves based on road conditions. I've really never experienced anything like it, almost like a computer controlled shock.
I ran Rancho 9000's with the adjustment box in-cab on my Suburban. They were OK, but I could never seem to find the right setting - either too stiff or too soft. I've had Bilsteins on my old Jaguar, great shocks (the jag took 6). Ran KYB's on the Acura with good results, but none were as sophisticated as the Edelbrocks, in my opinion.
I dont believe anyone would be disappointed with them.

I have the Rancho RS9000X shocks with the in cab controller and am overall very happy with them. On the lowest setting, they ride better than factory. Set them on 3-4, the ride near the factory shocks, and of course pump them up to 9 and they are very stiff! Haven't had a load on them yet so not sure where I will ride when towing, but can play with the in cab controls while driving to adjust and find that magic spot.
The only problem I had with the in cab controller system was leakage. The only place it leaked was at the connection at the shock. I finally covered the airhose where it connects to the fitting with JB Weld apoxy and no more leaks! Now the system is perfect and holds full air for over a week. Might hold longer, but that is how long I tested it at full pressure. |
