Need new tires on the PSD Ex. Currently have the stock 265/75/16's on there now, but I'm thinking of going to a little narrower highway all-season tire since that would better suite the wife's driving habits.

Has anyone gone to a narrower tire, and if so, have you run into any handling problems since you now have a smaller contact area? I'm thinking of installing some 235/85/16's which would be the same height, but just about 1/2" narrower. Most of the tire shops around here freak out when I tell them this and have tried to talk me out of it.

Anyway, any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

My personal opinion & practice is to maintain the manufacturer recommended size tires on the vehicle at the minimum or better.

Going anything smaller than the 265/75/16's could comprimise the handling, mileage and most importantly Safety

I'm sure other members would have a similar opinions but I do understand where you're coming from

i had the tire size you want. mine were toyo 235's and i went to 285 toyo mud terrains. having the smaller tire made a little difference in mileage. alot lighter. i didnt mind them. very positive steering compared to the 285's. i cant really see a safety issue as long as they are 8 ply rated or more. mine were ten ply rated.

Here's the rationale:
1. The stock tires are load range D. The 235/85's would be 10-ply load range E. Much better highway tire with less sidewall flex.

2. Her driving habits are all on-road. We use the F350 for camping and offroad activities, so I don't need an AT tire on the Ex.

3. The 235/85 are the same height as the stock tires, but 1/2" narrower. This combined with a less agressive tread should give better fuel mileage and a quieter ride.

4. Cost. From what I've seen the 235/85 all season tires are cheaper than a comparable 265/75 tire whether it be all season or AT.

I see you're from the Loveland area,I grew up in the Englewood area and am familiar with the weather.

How do you think those smaller all season tires are going to grip the snowy/icy roads this winter?

Is your X a 4x4 or 4x2?

4x4 PSD Ex.

If the roads get too bad we take the truck.

The tires I'm looking at specifically are the Michelin LTX MS tires. I know they won't have the same traction as an AT or MT, but it's not like I'm running a slick on it either.

The michelin LTX MS tires are good stuff,I had a set on a 4x2 F250 and they gripped pretty good on the snow when I traveled the Sierra Nevadas.

Stick with "E" load tires and I think ya'll will do okay but be keep the tire pressure in check, remember that's 8,000+ pounds riding on those four corners

If they are rated correctly for the vehicle's weight and the towing/hauling capacity you will be operating the Excursion in, then I don't see an issue other than it looking like you will have a set of pizza cutters underneath your X!!
