Woohoo! The brown truck dropped off another present today. I'll be doing a transmission flush this weekend, switching to Amsoil synthetic transmission fluid, installing a deep transmission pan (if it fits), installing a remote transmission filter, filter gauge, and a Factory Tech valve body. As usual, I'll be documenting everything and will post install articles when they're ready. Going to need lots of beer to keep me cool in the garage this weekend. It'll be hot.

Got everything done except for the deep transmission pan...the bolts that came with it didn't match the thread pattern of the holes. I didn't bother to get new bolts so I stuck with the factory trans pan.
The Factory Tech Valve body is very cool. The 1st to 2nd shift is a little harder than I'd like it to be, so it'll take some getting used to. Otherwise, all other shifts are very crisp. When "getting on it," the shifting is great. I can't wait to see how it does when towing.
The external transmission filter and filter gauge are also installed -- very cool as well! I'll be interested to see how many miles the filter lasts for.

Eric,
I have been thinking about adding the Factory Tech valve body to my 2001 V-10 Ex. You said the 1st to 2nd shift is harder than you like. Have you gotten used to it? Is it annoyingly hard? Do you need to have a good hold on your coffee when it hits? Or not that bad? I would like a crisper shift for towing, but I don't want to have passengers ask "What is wrong with your transmission?" when it shifts. Anything you can do to put the level of firmness into words would be appreciated.
Thanks. |

Thanks. | I'm getting used to it, yes. It isn't always hard, it really depends on how much throttle you're giving it. You don't need to hold onto your coffee when it hits, but it is more of a jolt than the other gears. However, under heavy throttle, the shifting is great. It's the slower speed that it can catch you off guard. I'm going to have the Factory Tech folks chime in on this thread to see if they can shed any light on the subject for us.
So far, the only people who have commented on the shifting are:
My Wife -- who knew what it shifted like before. She's much more aware of the modifications I do to the Excursion anyway, and also because I constantly give her crap if she doesn't notice them...so she's much more in tune with how the X operates regardless.
My brother-in-law -- he's got a '99 Superduty F250. His has a factory transmission, so he basically asked "what I did to it."
Any other non-savvy automotive people haven't said a thing.
I really do like how it snaps it into gear when accelerating down an on-ramp to the highway. When towing, I no longer feel like cringing when the trans shifts between gears. I always hated listening to the silky-smooth shift when accelerating while towing. You just know it's doing nothing but heating up the trans.
I still definitely recommend it. Let's see if we can't get Factory Tech to provide some feedback on the 1-2 shift.

Thanks for the feedback. I know what you mean about the slow speed/low throttle shift catching you off guard. In any event, I'll probably be getting one in the next couple weeks. I can always take it out if I don't like it. It would be interesting to hear from the Factory Tech guys. |

Eric,
As always, a first class write-up and pictures. Do you tinnk you'll be ok with the first to 2nd shift during the winter snow and ice? This is why I've been reluctant to firm up the shifts on mine. We get over 100" of snow here in NE OH. Neil |

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not worried about the winter time with snow/ice on the ground. I always keep winter driving/performance in the back of my mind. A chip would be worse with icey roads than the shift kit. I remember when I had a chip in my X and when it was raining, it was really easy to spin the tires from a stoplight on wet pavement.
