I've looked at this issue in depth. Maybe my $0.02 will help...

I had planned to install two fiberglass enclosures in the barn doors for two 10" subs, but ended up (for now) with a Q-logic double box for them. Definitely (IMHO) need two 10"ers to fill the Excursion and a lot of power (I'm running 1200 watts to the two subs at ~1 Ohm). I lucked out and got the box and two Infinity subs on a close-out at Circuit City for $99, so I'm going to stick with them until I get motivated to play with the system again.

I bought two MDF enclosures made for the rear doors from a guy on eBay but never installed them in the rear doors because of the great deal I got from Circuit City. The rear door location is probably the best bet if you want a lot of bass (I'll sell the two enclosures for $60 plus shipping if anyone wants them).

JL Audio (http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/excursion.html) makes a great single 10" sub enclosure that installs inside the center console, leaving a very shallow cubby hole for papers, etc at the top. It is not self-powered--you'll need an amp to drive it. Sounds great (a friend has it installed) but is pretty pricey at $575 plus labor. It also bounces the hell out of any drinks you have in the cup holders.

Q-Logic at one time planned to manufacture sub enclosures as I descibed above for the rear doors, but they never made it to market. They were listed on the web site last year, but no longer. A call to them last fall revealed that they have no plans to manufacture it since the Excursion is dead as of next year.

Hope that helps.

bender board is 3/8 mdf board with 1/8 score marks in it like tree bark. use it to rap around an object, then add layers to get your thickness. It also comes in 1/8 sheets as well. It's not sold in most home stores but any good wood shop can order it for ya.

COOL! Thanks for the info. Sounds like it could be pretty useful in a lot of applications. May have to look into this stuff!

I have seen people use a circle router jig and cut 1" MDF into rings then glue/screw rings them together. This would be a waste of some wood though but would be very strong and relatively low cost.

I have done that too, it takes a lot more time, wood and, a lot more glue. Another idea is to make quarter circles 1" deep by 1" wide and interlock them then offset them. that too takes a lot of wood, time and, glue.
To add strength to your box buy a can of paint-on bed liner for trucks, it makes for a very strong box. my 2 subs push a max of 3500 watts each. that's quite a bit of pushing and pulling, also there are no standing waves in the box

Scott,

Check your e-mail! I'm interested in your sub enclosures. The enclosures that Circuit City built into my rear "barn doors" are falling apart...I need a "fix" soon, my tunes just aren't the same anymore.

That was me brother. 2 Nakamichi 10"s, but only in the left hand door. The right hand has an amp mounted to it. They do a great job of filling the entire cab. You can see them on my registry pictures. Just look for my name Jason Daniel and the truck's name.... "Tinkerbell." Hey, I didn't name her, she's my wife's truck. Anywho, it's a custom fiberglass enclosure but I wasn't around when they did it so I couldn't get any pictures of the process. All I can tell you is that they do a great job enhancing the entire sound system.
