Hey guys, once again all the help and this site have fixed yet another problem. Bad bearing in the front hub assebly and after breaking it down to change the bearing , you all were right need to replace the whole assembly! Sucked!!!! $320 at the dealer but needed to be done.
A few questions for you.
1. Since I changed one side will the other side more than likely go out soon?
2. The spindle piece that the hub assembly slides into and bolts up to. Is there suppose to be
some grease in there? There was some but looked as if it came out of the old hub assembly, so I
cleaned it all out. Also when the hub assembly is out what is that big plastic washer with the four
channels in it that is on the axle for?
3. When the hub assembly was out, is the shaft suppose to be lose in there? I mean I had to grab it
and move it arount and it moves around where it enters the axle housing to. The u-joints all look
good but this is the first time digging into a 4-wheel drive vehicle so just looked funny! My friends
said it was normal but they all drive Chevys! |

It depends how many miles are on your Excursion, but I would say no. The other side has its own set of seals and everything and are completely unrelated to the side that you replaced.

The only grease needed is in the hub assembly as the bearing is in there. When I replaced my ball joints, I didn't grease anything.
The big plastic washer should go between the 2 metal washers. It is there to prevent wear on the metal washers.

The Chevy guys were right -- completely normal!
Glad you got it all figured out.

Charles,
You are source of vital info. What are the numbers for the bearings and seals in the hub that you replaced.
This info will save "tons" of money for us - I think!
Thanks, Richard

No! I had to replace the whole hub assembly. I think its crap considering I had the whole thing appart and just needed the bearings and abs sensor! Oh well its fixed and rides beautiful again! Anyone know the torque specs on the 4 hub bolts? I set them to 155 ft lbs..... |
