I want to say a BIG THANK YOU to who ever figured out the the 4 by 2 has longer struts on the back window than the 4 by 4. I just replaced my struts with the longer set and sun-of-a-gun I can now stand up straight under the open window. I'm 6'2" and just barely clear but that's so much better than banging my head every time i'm under it.

The longer 4x2 strut info has been around at least since we got our X in June 2002,they are indeed a scalp saver for many owners

When it's worse is when you wear a ball cap... that "hides" the hatch above the bill and ya fugitabout it and lean in to put something in the back

Yeah, I know. I have seen it from time to time. It just took me forever to order them. I never rememebered to do it when I was at the local dealer. This time, I was driving my EX to work and just stopped by on my way home. Next step is to get the larger exhaust. Hmmmmm..........

Can someone do me a favor and measure the length of either the 4wd or 2wd version? My lid is way too close to the Ex's lid, and I don't need to lose any more hair, particularly in large chunks.. I'm hoping that the previous owner installed the 4wd set.

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin our Excursion is not here to check the length of the struts but I can tell you the 4x2 struts are like 3" longer in length.

The 4x2 strut part number is Ford # YC3Z-78406A10-AA

Does anyone have the 4x part number by chance? My struts are labeled as: YC35-78406A10-AE, and are about 14.5" extended from pin to pin. Just wanted to verify that there is a longer strut than 14.5" with the part number that Bill gave above. The only difference in the p/n is the fourth digit (5 rather than Z, which is close enough to be a misprint, maybe?) and then the last "E" rather than an "A". In ChryCo-speak, the letters at the end just means that they've revised that particular part in some manner several times, but not necessarily the length.

A little more research: Google gave me this link: http://forums.thedieselstop.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=2457448&Main=2453538. Just past half way, Scotpart posts, "If you have the correct 2X4 struts, the glass on the lift gate will be parallel with the ground. " Well...mine is parallel with the ground, but the struts are 14.5" from pin to pin. I'm confused.

Thanks,
Kevin
