NO expert here but from my reading the various websites, the V10 has plenty of power but 10-12 MPG is the best you'll get out of it. I have the Powerstroke and it gets 16-19 depending on how I drive.

Other non-motor issues with any X is the rolling, swaying ride and poor handling from the factory. To fix this there are 3 mods you'll need to plan on doing that will cost around $1000 in parts alone.

1. upgraded shocks, as the factoy ones are WAY undersized for this 8000# ride ( a V10 may weigh a little less)

2. add a Helwig rear sway bar from JC Whitney, about $170 plus installation. ( the newer X's come with a rear sway bar)

3. Add Radius Rods at the rear leaf springs to control the axle wrap and something called "rear wheel steering" that occurs on the road over potholes, dips, etc and can at times throw you into the other lane without warning.

After these additions, you'll have a pleasant ride and good handling vehicle.

THe only other thing to be aware of is the brake issues with X's....may require some new higher end pads and possibly upgraded rotors as they tend to warp easily, unless you keep the lugs tightened to 160 ft-lbs at all times. I also understand ball joints tend to need replacing at 70-100K depending on the owner's driving habits and terrain.

I bought mine used at 94K and now have 122K on it, and all the mods described above, still running strong, and I'm very happy with it.

Welcome!

I have a 2004 V10 Limited and average about 10MPG in the city and about 15 on the highway. It hurts to fill it up these days! Part of the problem is that I love driving it , the family (wife and 3 children) love the room and everyone is happy in it. Unfortunately, I have force myself to drive my wife's car on weekends to help offset the higher gas prices.

My '04 is stock and I have no complaints at all on the way it drives or rides. I don't care too much about the that the brakes feel, but I think that's a commom complaint all X owners have who have haven't upgraded rotors or brake pads.

When you do buy, you should be able to get a great deal on a V10. While in the shop for warranty work I looked at the new Ford 500 sedan and asked about the "Family" pricing. Though I wasn't serious about trading, they tried to make a sale but wouldn't give me more than $25.5 for my X Limited with 20K miles on in and excellent condition(KBB, Edmunds, NADA, all show trade in to be between $28-29K) I later found out.

Goodluck and welcome!!

In the articles section of this website, checkout the "diesel vs. gas" article. That will give you an idea of what to expect. As for the good, I think there are TOO many things to list. Great for hauling the kids around, especially if you have the overhead dvd player installed. Great on road trips. Plenty of room for luggage, people, or anything else. The shocks are, in my opinion, are must do. The oem shocks don't do the job AT ALL . Rancho or Bilsteins are popular among members here. As for the v-10, I have no first hand knowledge of that engine. My father-in-law has one, a 2002 model, and has never had any problems with his. Just the usual wear and tear items and the preventative maintenance that goes along with it. Good luck with your decision. I think you will be very happy with whatever X you decide on

A couple of other things I meant to mention. Check out the 5 must do's in the article discussion topics to help improve your X. Also, one thing that came to mind as a downside was the transmission and torqe converter. That is a weak link in the excursion. If you plan own doing any major towing, you might want to invest in a tranny temp gauge if the model your are looking at doesn't have one (or even if it does, since some of the posts I've read before have stated that the factory gauge never moves until it is too late ). Once again, good luck with your purchase and welcome. Post up and feel free to ask as many questions as you like. This is a great website and the members here are very knowledgeable and willing to help

Just picked up my 2004 Limited V10 with 21,000 miles on it. She rides real nice, just got to get used to slowing down from a longer distance.
