I was delivering a load of firewood today and noticed a movement in the oil pressure gauge(stock idiot light gauge). As I'm driving, the gauge will drop to zero and pop right back to normal.... almost like a loose wire. I kept an eye on it for a while. It does not seem to be affected by a rough road (like a loose connection might) nor is it affected by engine rpm. Frequency of occurance is somewhat randon between once a minute and once every five minutes. I've checked the oil level and it's OK. It's been 4k miles since the last oil/filter change.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like the sender is starting to crap out. It is a cheap replacement. I'd try that first.

A bud of mine didn't trust the stock "idiot" gauge and installed his own oil pressure gauge and was shaken by what a good gauge showed him....
I don't recall the particulars, but will try to find them....
just that the idiot gauge was much more of an idiot than we all thought....
(maybe the same type gauge as our temp gauge... (off - on - and too late)

let me see if I can find his comments about it...

here's the first mention:
"I installed the usual, boost and egt but I also installed a real oil pressure gage. The stock gage reads in the middle at anything over 7 pounds which is not enough oil pressure. It does stop the "low oil pressure" complaints."

and
"Oil pressure - The stock gage is an on-off at 7 psi. I like mechanical, you need a gage that registers in excess of 120 lbs. I have had electrical gages fail.
and
"...I think you stumbled on to the reason that some of these trucks leak oil out the rear main. I added an Auto Meter oil pressure gage and cold start up is 100 pounds at idle and off the scale, in excess of 120 pounds if I drive it off cold. That is when I cnanged to Mobil D-1 5W40. At least the oil pressure is not off the chart!"
