Would it be ok to steam clean an engine and everything under the hood?

You can use a pressure washer but I'd stay clear of heavy detergents and not get the spray tip too close to the engine parts.

Typically what I do is make a lite mix of Simple Green with warm water and spray the engine down with the mix. I leave it on for about 10-15 minutes to lift all the dirt and oils. I take the hose with a variable spray pattern gun to rinse it all down then use a batch of clean terry towels to dry the engine area all off.

Be sure to cover the alternator and power steering pump prior to getting started tho.

I've had good luck spraying the engine down and then using a product made by Gunk (I believe) that's an engine foamer. You spray it on, it foams up, let it soak for a few minutes, then rinse off. Does a really nice job. Make sure to clean/wash the engine when it's cool.

High pressure water is not your engine's best friend

if you really know your engine well - you can stay away from the sensitive areas, but I'm like E,
I let soaking and rinsing do it instead of high pressure....
(that is if I EVER open my hood - I'm one of those drive it until it tells me something is wrong types)

and like CHP said - no harsh stuff that will eat your plastic/electronics/etc...
