Hi,

I posted in the Gasoline engine forum the other day about a 2000 V-10 I am considering buying to tow a 24-foot travel trailer and a fair amount of gear. I should be towing about 5500 lbs, plus another 1000 lbs in the tow vehicle.

A friend told me I would be much better off with a Powerstroke model, if I can find one. My budget is pretty limited, around $15,000, so the Powerstrokes I'm finding have 150,000 miles or so. My friend said the PSD would get much better gas mileage and be able to handle the load better than the V-10.

Any comments? I was about ready to plunk down $14,500 for a 2000 V-10, but I drove a PSD today and loved it.

Thanks in advance,
Curtis

Buy what you love. That way you'll never have to feel like you settled.

Curtis,

I'm biased as I have a 7.3L PSD Excursion with 150,000 miles and it does a damn fine job towing. I've been towing about 7,500 lbs. and on a road trip with the boat/trailer, plus 5 people and gear, I averaged 12.5 MPG (doing anywhere between 70 and 75 MPH).

If you are comfortable buying a vehicle with 150,000 miles then go for it. The PSD will last you a long time. You will get better mileage with the PSD (towing or otherwise), hands down.

Here's an article that weighs the pros and cons of gas vs. diesel, too:

Well, I ended up bumping my budget up a little and got a 2001 PSD Excursion 2WD with 79k miles. I've only had it for a little over 24 hours, but I'm loving it. I have a 3400 mile trip coming up in a month, so I'm going to get on the mods and upgrades right away.

Current plans:
RS9000 shocks
Hellwig rear sway bar
Front brake job
Trailer brake controller

I'll probably hold off on a chip for now... Don't want to void the remaining 20k miles on the PSD warranty.

Thanks for the advice!

Curtis
