Hi All,
Question on my power steering for you. I used to drive an F150 which I could literally turn the wheels using my pinky (while not even moving). I would drive my wife's Jimmy and think "man, this is way too tight". Now my X comes a long. My steering is so tight on that thing it's almost a workout on winding roads. Is there a way to "loosen'" up the steering (provide more power assist from the pump)? Are your X's tight too? Never driven another one to compare, maybe that's just the way it is and I need to spend more time at the gym Thanks! |

Girly-man!!
My steering seems normal to me. My Galaxie can be steered with just a pinky...not possible with the Excursion...at all. I've never thought it to be too tight, though. I drove a friend's 2000 F150 the other day and would say the the steering was comparable to the Excursion (except when stopped, of course).

they DO have big footprints on those big front tires
have ya checked the air pressure first ?
noticed on my 03 that when I dropped the air pressure too low it was like turning a battleship...
proper air and it was one finger...
Also maybe your weight bias has been changed to put more weight on the front....
ever notice how when the back end of a vehicle is loaded the steering gets lighter ?
Then of course there's the "something could be broke" suggestions

When our Excursion is in motion the steering is very smooth and easy but when it's parked and you want to turn the wheel it's abit firmer for sure, don't attempt to turn the wheel with the engine off as the power steering cap may possibly blow off and there'll be fluid everywhere(speaking from experience) that's when the wheel will be at it's toughest to turn
Have you tried changing the power steering fluid to see if that'd help?

Ex Gf had an Avalanch and her steering was so easy to turn I hated driving it.
This Ex, 2000, is comparable to my '98 Ram 1/2ton with the exception that I cannot turn the tires at a stand still
Even with the engine running I have to give the engine a little gas to turn the wheels. This is the same thing in my car also, so its not that big of deal to me. |

My 2000 got tight right before the power steering pump went out, but now it steers easily with 1 finger!! I would actually like it to steer a bit firmer personally...but I know my tie rods ect need replaced!!
