Just looking for suggestions. Am hoping I can avoid replacing my head unit.

Have a 2000 Excursion Limited with the single cd/tape deck head unit. It plays tapes and the radio just fine, but won't play any CD's. When you insert a CD it displays "TRK 01" but then after about 5 seconds it displays "Disc ERR" and kicks the CD out.

Will running a cleaning CD through help? Is this a common issue or an easy fix on these units? Or, am I stuck buying a new head unit for this thing?

Also, my cd-changer in the console doesn't have the cartridge. Can I buy just the cartridge or is better to just buy a whole new cd-changer unit? If the cartridge can be had, does anyone know the part # of one that will work (2000 Ex Limited)?

Thanks for the help.

Lets see if we can pull up any error codes from the stereo by following my instructions;

The stereo must be turned on and in tuner mode(AM/FM)
Simultaneously press the audio unit preset buttons 3 and 6
Each speaker is tested and displayed on the audio unit in the following sequence: RF, LF, LR, RR
The speaker walk-around test automatically continues and tests for a speaker short and CD/DJ. If a speaker short exists, SPKR SHORT will be displayed. If the vehicle is not equipped with CD/DJ or if the CD/DJ is not responding, NO DJ will be displayed

Now while in the speaker test mode press Preset #1
If "SELF FAIL" is displayed, press TUNE > to scroll view the error codes stored and give me those 5 digit codes if any display.

You have a first name by the way?

You're right Bill....as often as you've helped me lately we should be on a first name basis

My name is Jason by the way.

So, here's how my sequence went. Remember I have the single cd/tape head unit.

- Hit buttons 3/6 simultaneously. Started the speaker test.
- Pressed the 1 button and the display shows "DIA" and nothing else
- Pressed the right tune button and it just scrolls through a bunch of 3 digit codes (001, 002, 003, etc).

Didn't get anything else during the test.

What does this mean? Did I do something wrong?

Thanks again for the help.

The speaker walk-around test stops at each speaker and applies sound to each speaker for about one to two seconds. Each speaker is tested and displayed on the unit's display in the following sequence: RF, LF, LR, RR.

Did anything display after completing the speaker test prior to pressing preset 1?

I can't find the "DIA" display in the book tho.

Jason just out of curiousity did you insert a standard audio CD like you buy off the shelf at Best Buy or is this a custom burned CD done up from a computer?

Another thing that'll produce the Disc ERR on the display is the stereo unit being too hot temperature wise(Ford design flaw).

Bill,

I tried the test twice. First time I let it walk all the way through the speaker test and then it just went back to it's normal clock display. The second time I pressed on after the 2nd speaker and that's when it displayed "DIA".

I've tried 2 different stamped (store bought) music CD's with no luck. I also tried a burned one just out of curiosity and got the same thing.

Couldn't have been heat. Truck hasn't been out of the garage all morning

Wish I had a holder for the changer, then I wouldn't have to rely on the head unit. Could just play them from the changer and call it good.

Think I should try a CD Cleaning disk on this or you think it's just bad?

Indeed odd but might not be out of the norm as with our 99.5 F250's cassette/CD stereo it'd give the disc err once in awhile and it was anytime hot or cold weather,it could have been a dirty laser eye,I couldn't nail it down then either back then.

If you have an external changer that might be the best bet unless you have the fundage to pull the unit and send it in for servicing which takes up to 8 weeks turn around time and that's too long for me to be without tunes.

Could give the eye cleaner a whirl but I'm really touchy about that procedure as I've read it works and in the worst case can damage the eye permanently

The head unit itself might be beat as it's at 5 years of age or around there to where electrical components do lose their values intime due to heat, reptetive use or mechanism jolts.

Any possibilities to upgrade to an aftermarket head unit as they're really nice and are available for under $200 and most are Satellite Radio capable/ready today.

Only problem with aftermarket is the wife really likes being able to play tapes and cd's. There's not a lot of books on cd's yet and when we travel she likes to get the books on tapes to listen to. So, I'm not sure aftermarket is really an option.

I guess I might have to start looking for a replacement stock head unit. Also need to get the disc changer working since I haven't even tried it yet cause it's missing the cartridge.

Anyone have a spare cd-changer cartridge they wanna get rid of?

I would imagine you can find OEM CD/Tape decks on eBay for your Excursion. They were all interchangeable between SuperDuties, so there's gotta be a lot of them out there for sale.

With as many owners going aftermarket the prices of take off stock stereos should be pretty low
