I've read the post here on Hubs. But I've still got some questions. Here are my problems, when I select the 4x4 Mode switch the light comes on, transfercase engages. But no 4WD. If I cut the wheel har left and hard right there is no binding like there should be. I can't turn the hubs they are seized. Here is what I have found / checked. I check all my vaccume lines to make sure they are holding pressure with a mighty vac, i capped the lines going to the hubs to check the main system. As, ive read the seals go bad in the hubs. So, I know the lines are good. I then disconnected the driveers side vaccume line from the inner wheel that runs down to the hub and put the vaccume guage on it, it wont hold pressure to the hub. Did the same thing to the passenger side hub and its holding vaccume. Also, the front dirve shaft on the drive side will turn freely by hand but the passenger side won't turn. This is on 2x4 mode.
Any sugggestions?
I've ordered new auto hubs from ford and seals, but I want to make sure that its not something else. I can also hear the vaccume pump running on the fender, so its good. My AC controls acted up last week but thats when I was trying to get it into 4WD. Since then have been fine. The 4WD did work about 3 months ago, found out the hard way when I got stuck last week. The trucks got about 88K on it. I called ford and they are talking big money, so I think with some of your alls help I can get it back to working order. Any suggestion on what else to check or look for. |

You are on the right track with ordering new hubs. If you can't turn them, then they are seized and at the point of no return. I'm not sure if they come with new seals, but you should order them anyway ($2.25/ea or so...one for the driver and passenger side).
My hubs still function flawlessly at 151K and I use 4x4 quite often each winter and during the hunting season. Have you submerged your front end (above the hubs) in water at any point in the last 3 months since 4x4 last worked?

I just had all 4 ball joints replaced under extended warranty. They also replaced my axle tube dust seals, hub vacuum seals, and 1 other seal that is slipping my mind right now. I had the 4X4 hubs replaced about a yr ago as they too where frozen solid. When I lifted the X i got Ford to replace the front drive shaft also the slip yoke was not slipping any more. I have 92,xxx miles on the X and the warranty is getting ready to retire so I have been checking everything before its too late.
I would bet the seals in the back of the hub as Eric had mentioned are bad as where mine and now the 4X4 works flawlessly.
