My 2001 Ex is due for a 60K maintenance. Also, once again, my rotors have warped. I have seen the re-torque to 165 ft-lb posts, but I can't believe that with the bad shake I have, retorqueing lug nuts will make that bad of a shake go away. I'll try it, but I think my rotors need to be replaced. Any inputs?
Also, my shocks are fine, but are there high quality shocks available to give my Ex more of a carlike ride? The Ex really bangs going over rough pavement and bumps. I thought there may have been some posts about changing shocks to give a softer ride. I don't notice the rear hopping around over bumps like some posts I have read, but the Ex has a pretty rough/harsh ride going over choppy roads.
Thanx for any input.

Keith,
depending on the front bump stops you have, trimming or swapping them for the later years may help the front end....
(My 02 used to "Pogo" the front end on dips until I trimmed the stops...)
I had excellent results from Rancho 9000's - adjusted them to setting 1 (of 9) and it helped a lot...

What is a cheap source for the Rancho 9000's? About how much are they per set? |

The shake will not go away just by simply retorque. Here is what you need to do. Ford says that every 15K, you are suppose to pull the caliper pins and re-lub. Your pins are sticking, thus causeing the shaking. I went throught the same BS. 2 sets of OEM rotors. What I found worked for me was to lube the caliper pins with Mobil One syenthic grease. I know its not caliper grease, but it has a very high temp rating. I noticed that with traditional caliper grease that it was getting baked on the pins and its would be fine for about a week then the shaking would start up allover again.
I ended up putting power slot rotors on the front, did the grease thing like I said and have had no problems since going to mobil syn grease. That shaking drove me nuts ! And ford kept saying dope....well turn em! Yeah right. And yes its very important to have the lugs torgued to spec. I would start by pulling your caliper pins and cleaning them then apply a the mobil syn grease.

Oh, sorry the shock answer, I put Bilstiens on my X. I canged mine when she had 26K. When I pulled them you could press them in faily easy. They were shot, but they were not leaking. you would hit a bump and it was link a wild bronco!
Its nice a smooth now with that car like ride. Ive got almost 90K on it now.

Which "power slot rotors" did you go with, A-R-T?
I had just found Sam's Offroad on e-bay prior to reading your post for Rancho shocks, ordered them right after reading your post directly rather than through e-bay. Thanx!
Got 2 new front tires on their way from tirerack.com, plus the new shocks coming, expensive day thus far. Am I also going to need to fork out $400 to ART for front rotors? Any other similar quality rotors out there for a less expensive price? Still have to fork out $400 for some 60K mile services (tranny flush, coolant flush, belt, fuel filter) |

Jason,
The caliper pins...these are what the caliper slides on and are covered with the small rubber boots, right (just below the "caliper" arrow in this pic)? My brake vibration is so violent from 45-40MPH that I purposely try not to apply the brakes inbetwen those speeds. Can you help explain how this causes the vibration? Or is the pad being unevenly applied against the rotor thus causing the rotor to warp?
