Longtime lurker, but first time posting... This forum is a great resource!

I'm looking to buy a used 2004 EX 4x4 PSD with 21K miles. I know that on The Diesel place duramax forums, they can submit a VIN # for a service history check, to see if it has had any service issues, recall work done, etc.

Is there anything like that to check out a EX VIN? I'm sitting on the fence, looking to upgrade my truck for my new 28' Airstream (7500 lbs wet), so the new trailer has caused me to look into a new Tow vehicle.

I want the Diesel for mileage, power, and to be able to idel the truck when I tow the trailer on roadtrips, so the dogs in the back of the truck can stay cool or warm, depending on the weather?

You guys think this is overkill for a trailer and dogs? (no kids, just a wife and 2 dogs)

Welcome to the club!

Not sure on your VIN question -- although Ford can run a report on their OASIS system of the VIN. If you're looking to purchase from a dealer, it should be no problem for them to run this check for you.

7,500 lbs and 2 dogs doesn't seem overkill for a Diesel at all, to me. It's just the wife and me and our 100 lb. German Shepherd and the X is perfect. Not sure what size your dogs are but our Shepherd takes up the entire rear (behind the 3rd seat). We then fold the middle seats down for luggage gear or the occasional passengers that ride along with us (when we have the dog).

I would say that you'd definitely want the diesel for towing 7,500 lbs simply from a fuel economy standpoint. I averaged about 12.5 MPG towing that weight plus 6 people and gear. I have a 2000 PSD X, though. The 6.0L might get better mileage.

Diesel was $2.28 when I passed the station today. $2.49 for 87 octane. 'Bout time Diesel is the cheaper of the two again...but still nowhere near what it used to be a couple years ago!

Have you tried "www.carfax.com" ? You can get lots of information on the truck before you buy it.

i think all Carfax will tell you is if the car was in a wreck, hail damage, flooded etc. It will not give you the repair history of the vehicle done at the dealerships.

There was some info on dieselstop (dot) com where you could go to some other site and get someone to look up the VIN you emailed them and they would give you a verbal reading of any major items on your vehicle's history as far as repairs. (the OASIS report from dealer)

you might do a search on that website to look for it.

If you happen to find it please let us know, as I can't get onto the dieselstop posts the way the internet nazi has it filtered here at my office, and I do need to look into some history on my PSD X as well....thanks

FYI

Unless Carfax changed their policy, they do give a lot more information. I used them when I bought a used Oldsmobile Aurora about 5 years ago. The record showed each time the car was at the dealership for any kind of service. If mechanics don't report all the services they do, then of course Carfax won't know it.
