When I had the recall, Firestone actually removed the door jam sticker stating this was a Ford mandate. I have been running 65 psi for the last several months, and with OEM shocks the ride is better on a soap box racer with lawn mower wheels that have flat spots! I am contemplating which shocks to buy. |

I am pretty fed up with Firestone. When I did the recall, no label was ever removed, and they keep claiming that they have to set the pressure according to the label. The lable was probably not removed because they were out 5 tires, and the labor was for free. I figured it was a little F'ed up on their part not to remove it, and inflate to the correct pressure. Is 65 psi what you personally have been running? I would like to ask what Firestone recommended, but their knowledge and expertise is worth snot in my book. I just want to make these tires last, and have an alright ride.

When I had my Firestones, I ran anywhere from 50psi to 60psi. Usually 50 in front, 55 in the rear.

I run the Bridgestone Revos, and those pressures are what I seem to see a lot of. I am going to bump it up some from 45/50.

I run 65 due to alot of highway driving in Jacksonville. The wear pattern is great. I recently had a side wall blow out from a road hazard with about 14k on the tire. Firestone replaced the tire and the wear on the remaining tires is almost identical to the new tire. For free tires I am satisfied, though I would never buy a Fireshred again. |

Are you familiar with the chalk test for proper tire pressure for the load ????
actually gives you the perfect contact patch cross section for your tire and weight...
I take the tire, fill to max pressure, take tire chalk, put about 3-4 strips across the tread and around the tire in equal increments, drive a few ft, see how much of the chalk is wearing off in relation to the tread. If only a portion of the center is waring off, I remove a few lbs of pressure, repeat until I have the whole chalk mark removed from the tread. If you run through a mud puddle on concrete and see that the tread has some wet left on the outside, dry towards the middle, or vice versa, then you know that you have too much air in the tire, the water has replaced the chalk as your marking device. Dust, dirt etc also works as a marking device.
Some will say look up a tire load chart from the manufacture and put the appropriate pressure in according to how much your truck wieghs per axle. This seems like a lot of work to me, but it works as does my prefered method.
Do not be suprised depending upon the tire size you have, if your towing/loaded pressures are/need to be different than your unloaded tire pressures to achieve max tread width on the road.
(Many autocrossers and road course racers use this same method to ensure the best cornering!)

Bill:
If you want a good alternative to the TKOs, locate some Continental Sportivas somewhere around there (call Lanny at the Discount Tire up on Central just north of the Turnpike - I don't think they carry them, but he may be able to point you in the right direction). The Sportivas have almost identical tread pattern and composition as the TKOs, but run almost half the price (~110 per tire the last time I re-booted my Ex). I've got a little over 30K miles on this set, and am trending toward 40-45K, which is pretty darn good wear for a truck that weighs a little over 4 tons! I got them at a Tires Plus in NV; they've got stores all across the country. The Sportiva is a nice-looking, quiet, solid performance tire for our application - I'll be driving from the Western Slope to the Front Range, near Pueblo, for my next set when the time comes. I'll be putting them on my Grand Cherokee next, too!
I've put lots of thousands of miles on these tires doing the round trip between Montrose and Plano - we just moved up here, and still own our property out in Princeton. Hoo-rah!

I'll keep note for the Continentals for sure We've got almost 20k on the TKO's and the tread seems to be wearing not too bad
Next time you're going to be coming down to the Princeton/Plano area drop me a line for an eyeball
Heading over to Lowry Crossing Sunday morning to help a SuperDuty owner with his truck
Take care up in snow country!

Ive got about 15K on my LTX A/T's and they seem to be very decent in the wear department!! Sidewalls are stayin nice and firm, so hopefully I will get 60K+ outta them!! Ive got to take it and get them rotated and balanced here soon!!
