I used to get 14-15 mpg (city) on my 2002 Ex. I tried the Superchips programmer and actually realized a decrease to 12 mpg on performance tow mode. I drive slower than my grandmother. I wrote to Superchips and they beat around the bush. My trips are now shorter in distance and my MPG are at 12 (without the programmer). What do most of you see on your Ex, in terms of MPG (with or without programmers)? My Ex is completely stock. |

David,
A couple of weeks ago, I took a 1000 mile round trip. Going there I got 15.5 mpg. Coming back I got 18.9 mpg. These are manual calculations and I was going with the speed of traffic about 80 mph for about 700 of those miles. Today I filled up my tank and I got 16.1 mpg. My X is stock.

David,
presume you have the 7.3L ....
My 02 4x2 Ex with the 7.3l used to get awesome mpg for it's size...
IIRC (that was 2 Ex's ago) it got in the range of 16 or 17 around town and upwards of 20 on the highway...
I didn't ever watch it closely since I didn't buy it for mpg... but I was always impressed....
Now I did keep the alignment perfect and the tire pressure up to the highest safe range I could stand...
and using the SCMT seemed to help when I started using it....
but any programmer adding power has a BIG impact on the mpg if you USE the power...
So, your right foot is the biggest factor in the mpg formula...
as a test....put a 2x4 under the accelerator pedal and see if that helps
adjust it such that no throttle setting will get you over 2000 rpms at any time and watch what your mpg does...

My average nowadays is 16.5 MPG. No chip. 7.3L, K&N air filter, 3.5" downpipe, 5" exhaust, 153K miles. I just picked up an additional 0.4 MPG by simply airing the tires up to 70 psi (used to run at 50-55psi). I dial down the Rancho shocks to accomodate for the increased air pressure.

Like so much Superchips hype ....
23 mpg is probably not obtainable on a regular basis with our huge bus....
Granted - I used the same discussion point with my wife when tearing the money out of her hand to purchase a tuner.... but....
MAYBE with a trimmed down 7.3L excursion under PERFECT conditions,
WITH a tailwind, drafting an 18 wheeler,
and downhill - possible - but not regularly obtainable...
With all due respect....
if you are going by the overhead,
the tuners "fool" the already suspect overhead that many call the "lie-o-meter" ...
NOT Ford's best effort on that little calculator
also filling up our buses to the same level each time is almost an art form given the venting method Ford chose to use... and therefore getting an accurate amount of fuel actuallly used is difficult

You must remember that anytime a chip is added to a Lariat truck or Limited suv the computer will throw out ficticious mpg numbers. Tossing in a chip to add horse powerd and torque and getting better fuel mileage is nearly impossible. I ran a chip in the F250 from 50K-83K miles when the tranny died and never noticed any improvemnt in fuel mileage. At 199K miles now my best mileage to date has been 19 mpg with an average of 16.5.
The diesel Excursion on the other hand with 147K miles has gotten 20 mpg on a few occasions. Last fall out in Montana and Wyoming we saw 20 mpg and twice now going up North to the cabin. The Excursion averages 18 mpg when I drive it and 16-17 mpg when my wife drives it. Both vehicles have no performance modifications.

Last year early in July, my brother, his wife, her sister and I left Los Angeles for North Logan, Utah. I offered to drive my EX if others paid for the fuel. My brother took me up on that and off we went. We logged a bit over 2000 miles [round trip] and my brother kept all the receipts for fuel and at the end he calculated our mileage. Mind you, we went through Nevada and Utah where the speed limit is 75 mph and almost everyone was going 80 to 85, us included. I had bragged about 24 mpg on the highway at 70 mph. He was skeptical of my overhead mileage guesser so he did it the old fashioned way. He was pleased to announce that for the 2000 miles, we averaged slightly better than 20 miles to a gallon. Hot, dry, flat, and mountain roads. We had them all.
