Any one here have an aftermarket overdrive unit installed? What would a 30% overdrive at 70 mph cruise translate to in mpg increase? I currently get 15 to 16 on trips with the V10

Essentially, it will lower your RPM by 30%. Try driving at highway speeds at 30% lower RPM and see what your mileage is. This would be the best indication of what you can expect. I would also anticipate a loss in horsepower due to the additional component in the drivetrain (no idea how much, though). I would imagine the increase in fuel economy would negate the loss in HP.

Gear Vendors also makes a similar product. http://www.gearvendors.com

Hi Scott....
You may get some mpg improvement, but at what cost ?
I wonder if it is just like buying a 3-400 dollar tuner, it can get you some mpg help, but will probably take a VERY long time to recover that initial investment....

Not sure how much an overdrive unit is, but let's say $1000 for our discussion...

How long is the return on investment of that $1000 and are you going to keep the bus that long ?

Just like trading in our buses for a more fuel effecient one,
there's some economic considerations NOT to do it as well
I mean, if I get $10,000 for my $30,000 bus.... I can buy a lot of fuel for $20,000

so there's more to figure than just the mpg increase...

Thanks, Eric and Johnboy. I think I will just enjoy riding in style and pay a little extra for the safety, comfort, and power.
