I have a '00 7.3L X that I purchased just a month ago (BTW...I LOVE IT!!).... Over the past couple weeks, it has begun to be a bear trying to start. I've noticed it seems to be the first start of the day that it has trouble with...I had both batteries tested and they checked out ok even under load. I went ahead and cleaned the terminals but nothing has improved. A friend with a '99 F250 7.3L mentioned it could be time to change the glow plugs. I'm not totally sold on the glow plug suggestion because when I try to start it, it is cutting the interior lights out.
Suggestions?
While I have you, do you recommend taking it to a dealer for that pre-100K check-up?
Anything I should look for and what maintenance would you all recommend since I do not knwo the history? I have already replaced the stock air filter with a K & N. It increased my mileage slightly but I'm only seeing about 13.8mpg on this baby.
Lastly, it has 285's for tires...I am considering replacing them back to stock 265's.
Thanks! |

To add to the confusion, I had believed that I was supposed to always wait for the "Wait to Start" light to go out...to allow the glow plugs to do their job...before starting. Well, after much reading of the site and forums last night I realized I didn't need to do that unless it's 50 degrees or below...so, I go out today, turn the key over like starting the wifes car and it fired right up...first time.
hmmm....so, it seems that waiting for the glow plugs is draining the batteries down a bit? Much confusion...hope someone can help...I'm in Central PA and the cold weather will start in a month! |

The glow plugs are probably fine but there's a glow plug relay that's known to go out. If you're under the 100K warranty, bring it in and it should be covered under the $100 warranty deductible.
Congrats on the new purchase and welcome to the club!
