I am a new member to this forum and I have searched for something regarding the problem that I have. I have an 04 Diesel EB X (I think I said that right). I just bought it about two months ago. My wife and I love it so far except for one thing.

I purchased the vehicle from a friend of a friend who is a General Manager of a dealership near my home. The GM was driving it for a short time during which he took the car to a deisel specialist. He had them put in some type of chip, a large exhaust system (3" I think) and a K&N type air filter.

He told me (prior to me purchasing the vehicle) that he took the chip out because it would make it tough for his service department to repair anything that went wrong.

I had the car for about two weeks when the check engine light came on. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the CNC tube and indicated the car was fine. About two weeks later the check engine light came on. I took it to the friend's dealership and they indicated that the turbo was not working and replaced it. I suspect that this was the problem in the first place.

Priot to the replacement of the turbo, I was getting 14-17 mpg. Now I am getting 10-13 mpg. I contacted the dealer and asked the service person what might cause this. He didn't know and recommended that I take it in again.

I have read a few posts here and I am wondering if they might not have reprogramed the computer after taking the chip out. Or maybe they were supposed to do this when the installed the new turbo and or the other items that are not stock on the truck?

I am also wondering if there is anyway to know when the turbo is actually working besides the whine? I understand that this is called the spool up. I plan to take the vehicle back for repair but I want to be able to suggest that they fix it right.

Thanks in advance.

Bill,

Welcome to the site.

Have you noticed a drastic decrease in performance with the new turbo?

FYI, when a chip is taken out, there is no reprogramming, it simply returns to stock. A chip basically plugs in on top of the computer, thus overriding the factory programming. By removing it, you do not alter anything with the factory programming, so I would not consider this the cause of your poor mileage.

An aftermarket boost gauge would indicate if the turbo is operating at peak performance. It's possible that there may be a leak and you're not getting the full boost your engine requires to operate at maximum efficiency. This is completely speculation. With a leak, you would typically experience a decrease in performance over before.

Let us know what the dealer finds out!
