OK, so i've been driving around the (new to me) 2005 EX, and I notice that almost constatly, under vibration, body roll, anything, there is a clunking/rattling sound. It's not rythmic, so it doesn't seem to be tied to the drive train (that I know of). At first I thought it was the parking brake cable slapping agains the frame, but I dont see any evidince of that.
Dealer told me that it's a know issue that some body mounts hit the frame, but to me, this is pretty constant.... Is this the body mount issue that fols have mentioned before? How do I confirm if it is or not? |

Its either the body mount or a swaybar endlink bushing thats shot!! I know that the bushings in the stock endlinks are really soft and they do tear fairly easy!!

I man handled the front swaybar and it seemed to be firm - didn't see any wear marks on the fram or bushings, so I'm guessing it must be the body mount. If it is, I assume it is a warranty issue? If not, what can I do to fix it myself?

My money is on the body mount. Get the body shop to check it out. I'd make them replace the upper and lower insulator. It is a common problem, though an 05 would be young in the game. If it feels like it is under your feet, that's what it is.
Good luck!

OK, so the Dealer says the body mounts are fine, and the front swaybar and bushings are fine. He says that the excursions are known for the fuel line to slap against the body and frame.... I don't beleive so.. anyone ever heard that excuse? I'm gonna go back, and get the service manager / shop foreman involved... they want me to fill out "completly satisfaied" on the service survey, they are gonna have to work for it.

Sounds like a crock to me. I've never heard that fabrication before! Did they volunteer to fix it?? Fuel line slapping against the frame--if that was the case they would be into a recall. You can't look at a body mount and say it is all right. Honestly, if it is under the floorboard, 99 times out of a hundred-it's a body mount. I would drop it off and tell him to call me when it's fixed. Strange, my 01 has no such noises--now!
Good luck!

Dave, Your correct, I didn't buy it either, so I escelated it to the Mgr, and I just dropped it off again.. This time, with the expecation that it gets fixed, and a rental on their dime.
Sometimes I thinkg once they know that I bought it used, they figure any problem with it was my fault or from the previous owner, and lack a desire to fix it. Its an 05 with 13K miles on it for crying out loud, the previous owner couldnt have done some of the things that they've said!!
Wait and see...

I don't believe there are many dealerships that are good at troubleshooting. If there's no TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) or if it's not a standard repair/service, it's difficult for them to think outside the box and get a competent tech to spend quality time diagnosing the problem.
I hate it too when they pass it off as something the current/previous owner "must have done."
If I were Ford, I would employ people to specifically monitor Internet forums to cross reference these types of problems with their TSB database. They rely on people reporting all problems to the dealer, but it's frustrating to do so when the customer gets a shrug of the shoulders when something can't be fixed.
I remember bringing my X into the dealer when it was still under warranty and I complained of a rattle in the dash when the A/C was running. 2 or 3 times I would look at the work order after picking it up and see something along the lines of, "CUSTOMER COMPLAINS OF RATTLE. TOOK FOR TEST DRIVE. COULD NOT DUPLICATE PROBLEM." Never got a call to clarify the issue, they just submitted it as if their work was done. (Climbing down from the soap box!)
