Hi Eric
Problem solved on my friends X. He tried three new altenators on it and they all kept the light on.
Then he opened the last altenator, and as they in most cases are either rebuilt or manufactured somewhere with less expensive workforce, he found the problem. The regulator inside had too much protective wax on it so that it could't get the ground properly. Little sandpaper to connection and life became easier again = light turned OFF.
Parently the other "new" parts had the same problem, as they came from same supplier.
All readings in meter shows normal and light stays off.
Just in case he planned to change the CPS sensor, as he had heard that altenator problem and CPS sensor have been somehow linked with problem cases.

Eric,
When you replace your alt, go through and remove and replace your grounds. Sometime this stuff gets loose, dirty, whatever. Sometimes the body strap can become an issue. I upgraded my wire size at the alt, battery, and body and incressed my voltage from 13.6 to a solid 14.4.

Good to hear Erik
So your problem was as well a bad "new" part. Same as in our case. Seems that it's always worth paying extra buck or two to get a proper replacement part.

| Quote: | $250 for the Napa 3-year warranty alternator. I didn't think I was going the cheap route, but apparently I was. Glad it was under warranty. Should be smooth sailing from here on out. |
I too bought the 'new' alternator for my Cutlass. It has the 3.4 motor and you basicaly have to tear down the right front drive line to get it out
Shop wanted $500+ to replace it just labor alonw
But after 6 months i think it is giong out again because all the lights on the car 'flicker'
The "flicker" goes faster as the rpm's go up |
