If you ever wondered how the Ford Excursion would do in a collision with a bigger vehicle, here's the answer:
I had parked my Ford Excursion in front of my home one recent evening, when a plumber returning to the shop after a long day drove right into the back of the Excursion!
Boy, was he surprised.
The Plumber was all right, although his truck was a total loss. They figured his fully stocked truck was weighing in at about 13,000 lbs, and the impact launched my Excursion over 40 feet.
The Excursion also was declared a total loss after they realized that the frame was bent and the rear floor was buckled.
Everyone was amazed that the Excursion did as well as it did in the collision, and I was able to drive it for the remainder of the weekend (till I got a rental truck on Monday).
Pictures of the crash are at: http://joefrisinger.tripod.com/ford_excursion
Also, if you have a 2 wheel drive Excursion, and are looking for better safety and handling, I have some LANDYOT Radius Rods that I bought and never installed. They're for sale for $150, and can be found in the Excursion's Classified Forum.
I do need to point out that these are specifically designed for the two wheel drive model, and are not correctly sized for the 4 wheel drives.
These are the Generation II design, and the workmanship is first rate (like all of Ken's work).
Pictures of the radius rods are at: http://joefrisinger.tripod.com/landyot_radius_rods
If you'd like to get improved safety and handling for your 2 wheel drive Excursion at a great price, please contact me at:

Thanks everyone! |

Have any immediate plans for a replacement vehicle?

Glad no one hurt, but sad to see an X die like that.
I have become PARANOID about something bad happening to mine now, since I have put a few thousand $$$ into a brand-new '05 getting it just right and it cannot easily be replaced...

Thanks for the kind words everyone.
Although it was one heck of a collision, I was amazed how well the Excursion held up. The entire passenger compartment was fully intact, and the only reason it was totaled is the damage to the frame and a crease in the rear floor.
One of the reasons I bought the Excursion was the protection its size offers in the event of a collision. I used to be a firefighter, and I've seen too many occasions where size mattered. There’s a reason that virtually every firefighter drives a large SUV or pickup.
As far as a replacement - I went with a Corvette. Low on function. High on fun.
Enjoy your Excursions!
