CHPMustang? Others?
Here I am 37 years old and am considering pursuing my lifelong dream of becoming a Police Officer.
Is that crazy for my age? I meet the cut-off so I guess my local Dept. doesn't think so...

I was a private contractor for the CHP in Motor Transport Division and Headquarters.
If you can meet the requirements & Physical standards for the Dept you're interested in I'd say go for it,just start out in the reserves to get your feet wet then when a permanent position opens up with one of the Departments jump on in there long as you can deal with the domestics, drugs, accidents and other misc radio calls

I have 2 cops in the family, both brother-in-laws. One got a 4-year degree and went right into the force. The other is in the National Guard, spent some time overseas, and eventually became a cop on one of the Indian Reservations in northern MN. When you think North Dakota and northern Minnesota (where they are each located), you'd think rescuing farmers from runaway tractors and livestock. The poverty-stricken Indian reservations in MN and ND are very crime-ridden and are a source for some really bad situations. Meth also seems to be a huge problem in the rural areas, too. I think they see everything any other cop would, just on a smaller scale.
Around here, a 37-year old would have significant competition against new recruits. Additionally, white males will have the toughest competition getting into the force. Usually they do many other things to build their resumes to have a leg up on the other guys (4-year degree, reserves, CSO, military, etc). Otherwise if you are non-white and especially female, you are almost guaranteed a position provided you are competent and meet the physical requirements. At least according to my brother-in-laws.
You know any cops in your area? Ask them what they think and what the competition is like for new recruits. I would think you would bring a different perspective to your job with life experience vs. a kid who's still very green and just out of school. Might even be an advantage.
I say go for it! Especially if it's a lifelong dream. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Thing is here on the Big Island we are in desperate need of Police Officers. There is something like 75 vacancies. Most of the locals who apply cannot pass either the written test or the drug screening. They've opened the position(s) to out-of-state residents even.
I do not think I'll have ANY competion. 14 years in the Army help, too.
I have a few freinds who are on the force. One COP in my town is urging me to apply. I think I'll go "talk story" with him tomorrow.
BTW...

Unfortunantly I am not a female and if I was I wouldn't be online, I'd be playing with myself

Now THAT makes you LEO material
Keeping a good attitude I would think would be the most important attribute you could bring to it...
Knowing me, not sure I could keep the correct attitude after too many "incidents"
Just the statements about the racial prejudice in hiring actually burns my buns !!!!
Not that it indicates a lower qualification, just that it IS a qualification - Dang it !
