What a great site. My wife and I have started looking for a used diesel Excursion preferably a 2WD. We like to travel and go camping a lot, and with kids and a large dog we need something bigger than an Expedition. But I'm a Ford man so a Chevy Suburban is out of the question!

First question, will a 2WD get better mileage than a 4WD? We don't go off road much so I'm not sure if it is worth while getting a 4WD.

Second question, I know from what I have read on this forum that the PSD is a great engine but I have also heard that the transmission can be a weak point for Ford's truck line. How much should I be concerned about this?

Third question, some of the used X's have a little over 100,000 miles, 120,000 to 130,000, should we be concerned about buying a high mileage vehicle? And should we consider getting an extended warranty?

Look forward to everyone's replies and advice.

Thanks Robbie in Arizona

Robbie,

Welcome to the site! To answer your questions:

1.) Yes, the 2WD will get better mileage than the 4WD Excursion. Lighter front end and all. It will also provide improved ride quality.

2.) The transmissions are usually the first to go out of everything else on these vehicles related to the drivetrain. Mine went at 87,000 miles, but I was also running a chip at the time (had been for 82,000 miles). Proper maintenance (fluid/filter changes) are a must. I would also recommend a remote transmission filter, synthetic fluid, and a Factory Tech Valve body. While these items will not make your transmission bullet proof, they will help extend your transmission's life. The important thing to find out with the used X you buy is the history of its transmission. I'm approaching 80,000 miles on my 2nd transmission now and no signs of it going bad anytime soon.

3.) I would not consider those to be high mileage vehicles at all. 100K is no problem on a Powerstroke. I assume with that kind of mileage, you are looking at a 7.3L Powerstroke Excursion. Mid 2003's and up have the newer, 6.0L Powerstroke. I just turned over 160,000 miles on my 2000 7.3L this week. I run Amsoil synthetic oil and highly recommend it.

I've also done some other modifications to my X that you should check out (I've done install articles or extensive photos for most of them). Click on the vehicle link under my name to the left of this post to see the full details.

You are on the right track for choosing a vehicle that can handle the kids, a big dog, and the road! They are great vacationing and road trip vehicles. This summer we went on a road trip and vacation over the 4th of July weekend with our friends (7 adults, gear, and towing a 7,500 lb boat). Set the cruise at 70 MPH and it drove like a dream.

Thanks you for your recent response it was very helpful. We went shopping yesterday and are finding the 2WD deisel X are hard to come by and sell quikly. To keep myself from buying something I'm comforable with because it may sell quickly can we get and idea about how much gas mileage we would give up by getting a 4WD v 2WD.

Thanks On the hunt :

Perhaps a few others can chime in. I average 16.5 MPG with my 4x4 X.
