Hello Everyone,

I've got a good one here. While driving my 2000 Limited 4X4 V10 above 20 mph, I hear what sounds like birds chirping outside my window Either these birds are following me everywhere or I have this noise coming out of my truck (front axle/hubs suspected). The noise does not seriously increase as I get up to 55, which seams strange. All my searches about regreasing the front hubs has led to $300+ hub replacements instead. I guess I won't be teaching my son how to get a hand full of grease to repack bearings. Any ideas of what this sound is would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

My take is that it's not good. Having had those same birds, it sounds like a hub.

If the listening level is too loud, please inform the driver, so he can promptly pull over, and let you out.

Thanks Bill. Was there anything special that you did to confirm it was the hub? Did the sound get louder as it came closer to going out? I'm trying to figure out if it's a project I need to get to ASAP or wait for more tell tail signs. ???

Mike,

I think the telltail sign has already shown up with the pretty birdie sounds. It won't be too much longer before you completely smoke the bearing. You don't want to have this happen while driving as your X will pull severely to the side (suddenly) when the bearing finally gives way. Replacing the hubs is an easy job for you in the garage, I'd go for it. Bummer that it's $300, but worth it for safety reasons.

I had a bearing go out in a Bronco I owned while driving down the highway. It is a scary experience.

I was out of town in the middle of nowhere so I had no choice but to put about 500 miles on mine. It didn't chirp at freeway speeds. But given the chance I wouldn't want to do it again

Thanks Eric. Is it true that the bearings are not servicable? Can they be purchased from a Kragen or Pep Boys? One last question. What size socket will I need to remove them? Thanks to all for the advice and input.

The bearings cannot be serviced. You will need to buy a new hub assembly for each side (assuming both are bad). They are a completely sealed unit. It's an easy job to do yourself. Here's a short video on how to remove the hub:
