I bought my 2000 X PSD 100K miles, this summer with the thought that it would get 15-17 mpg in the city (data from web forums) and 20-23 mpg on the highway.
There must be people getting this type of mileage.
I have gotten 12-13 mpg in the city and 17-18 mpg on the highway no matter how fast or slow I drive.

Question is, is there anything I can do, or check, to increase my fuel mileage? The only modification I have done is cut a hole in the panel behind the grill that blocks the air intake. There is a sensor just below the hole I cut, should I move it?

I tried running at 2000 rpm on a trip I took last weekend, it didn't seem to help. I took a trip this summer and ran at 2300 rpm and somebody said try running at 2000 rpm or below.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Shannon

The colder winter weather most if not all Diesel engines exhibit reduced mileage.
Our combined MPG during the winter is around 17 but all freeway during the summer under 2,000 RPM's non towing we definitely get 20-21+

When accelerating from traffic lights we always keep it under 2,000 RPMs which makes a MPG difference for our Excursion.

My suggestion is upgrade your air filter to a Tymar for starters and install a Walker Big Truck Muffler(straight thru design). There's several other low buck/free mods that can be done to bring the mileage and performance up quite abit.

If you're going to be in the Dallas area in January we'll be having a Ford Powerstroke Mod day which you'll be more than welcome to drop in on to get your Excursion tuned up!

Sounds like you know the biggest improvement is with your right foot

It really does make a difference !

My biggest mpg drain in the winter
(other than the less powerful winter blend fuel they sell)
is my remote start...
idling doesn't get very good fuel mileage:no :

Might check your air pressure and bounce it up as high as you can stand it without jarring any denture fillings loose,
also your front end alignment to ensure it's not trying to turn all the time

and silly as this sounds... a rear sway bar helped my 02 4x2's mpg !!!!
Once on, I didn't have to slow down to 2 mph to make a turn, which allowed me to caryy more speed and therefore not have to accelerate as much

Just remember, we have a large, safe, comfortable vehicle that is actually listed as a ULEV in my 6.0 liters case and it has the aerodynamics of a shoe box .... so it's not going to give us the same mpg as a 2 seat 4 cylinder

As CHP said, I can recall on my previous 7.3L of getting 20 + regularlly on the Hwy if I slowed down form my usual speeds !

good luck...

I bought the X with 104K miles and now has 153K miles and have watched fuel mileage whenever I drive it (wifes daily driver). On 5 trips we've seen around 20 mpg during fill ups. The worst mileage has been this time of the year with lots of idling which is 12 mpg.

My 99 F250 weighs less, has 3.73 with one wheel wonder, and always gets less fuel mileage by 2-3 mpg on average, doesn't make any sense to me.

I have a '00 PSD X with 162K on it (bought it new). I average 15-16 MPG city and 17-18 MPG highway. My best is 19.5 MPG.

Speed limits around here are 70+ on the highway, 75+ in North Dakota where I frequently travel. Anything above 65 MPH and you start to see a decline in fuel economy.

I would recommend the following for you, for starters:

1.) Air your tires up to 70 psi (or whatever is comfortable for your butt and what your tires are rated for). I can run mine at 80 psi but like them at 70 psi. I dial the Rancho shocks down to a softer setting to accomodate for the stiffer tire. This alone gave me a 0.4 MPG increase this summer.

2.) Synthetic oil. I run Amsoil. I have not done a side-by-side comparison, but I run 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel oil made by Amsoil. It allows me to run 10K miles before changing (filters still get changed at 5K).

I have an aftermarket intake and exhaust system. Depending on your funding, the prices on these vary considerably. I'm holding out for an aftermarket chip, so I've done the intake and exhaust in preparation for it.

Welcome to the club!

good point about synthetics....

IIRC, I caught one of the Horsepower shows or something where they dyno'ed a vehicle,
put synthetics everywhere and the rerun on the dyno should a measureable gain...

Now a dyno run is not a scientifically accurate measurement, but it does support the trend I've seen since putting syntheitcs in my 05....

worth the extra cost of synthetics ?
up to you,
but just like the tuner I got,
it ain't all about the MPG

Thank you all for your input, I feel a little better and will look into the air filter and muffler upgrade.

Bill, I could make it to Dallas if you think my X would benefit from the trip. Please let me know when and where you plan to do this.

Thanks again,
Shannon

PS- has anybody tried running taller tires to get more MPH out of the 2000 rpm mark?
