Now that my Ex has turned 100k at the odometer, it is time for a makeover. What I am concidering, is to put on a 05 front. My question is what are the list of parts that I will need to do this? Do I need to get parts through local ford dealer? Do I stick with the OEM head light assembly or go to aftermarket? What would you guys suggest? Is there a better taillight assembly? Well thats enough for now. More questions to come later.
Thanks for the info.

From what I saw a few months ago when this was becoming a popular thing to do is that it is in the neighborhood of $1,000 (new bumper, new headlights, new grill, and possibly one or two other smaller items). These parts are available through a Ford dealer (locally or online -- online would probably be cheaper, but shipping would most likely negate that advantage). I'm not sure what's available for aftermarket headlight assemblies since they are still so new.

I picked up a pair of APC headlights with integrated fog lights and new corner lenses for $135. That gave the X a more updated look. I'm not finished with the install article (nor have I gathered the good pics, but here's a quick before/after comparison):

After (APC headlights & corner lense):

To help keep costs down I would recommend using the lights that Eric has (dems nice looking lights! ) and get a modified 05 grill off ebay for use on pre-05 trucks. It looks really nice having that chrome grill meet up with the chrome bumper!

Thanks Eric and Ken. I do like the APC projector lights. Since my Ex has no chrome I am leaning towards a cross bar grille, with the APC lights. I do have a couple other questions; any suggestions for fog light replacement/upgrade. Also I have heated pullout mirrors, how hard would it be to swap out those for lighted mirrors.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

The APC's have integrated fog lights in them, which is cool. I have an '00 X without the integrated fog light switch so I purchased a new one from a Ford dealer online. I plan on wiring the APC fogs to this switch. In your situation, you could hook up both sets of fogs (APC + OEM) to the switch. I'll let someone else chime in for replacement bulbs for your fog lights as you can just get brighter Silverstar's.

Mirrors -- I've been contemplating this same mod since I backed out of the garage and cracked one of mine. The new mirrors with turn signals are in the $400 range, so that's still a little too much for me to justify right now, but it's a direct swap. The only thing you'll have to add is a wire to the mirror for the turn signals. I've not done this yet so I don't know the particulars on how to do it.

I snapped some more pics of my APC lights tonight. I finally got them aligned correctly, too. These are a great set of headlights when combined with Sylvannia 9005's and 9006's. Next on the list is a Brite Box so I can run both regular headlights and high beams at the same time. The nice thing is that the bulbs are separate, so I don't run the risk of overheating the bulb as they are in separate chambers in the headlight assembly.

(The pics with the lights on below are just regular beams, NOT high beams)

Have you upgraded the headlight wire harness just in case the train lights are too much for the stock wiring?

Not yet -- I plan on doing that with the bright box mod. That's a job for when the X is in NC. The little tabs on the headlight plugs snap pretty easily in this cold weather. I was fortunate enough to be working in my garage tonight with the outside temp in the mid 30's. That's like a heat wave around here. Even took her to the car wash because with these temps, the doors won't freeze shut overnight!

Eric, nice lights. Where did you get them? Is that a big crack in your grille or just dirty?
