Hi
I replaced my Ford Excursions' steering boxes twice with a Ford replacements, the current one has been in the truck for approximately 25K miles and is just plain worn out AGAIN! Each time I swapped them I flushed the PS Pump as well to remove any debris.
I'm not really to willing to invest in a third Ford Remanufactured box, can anyone recommend a good source for a high quality "NEW" box or a very high quality Remanufactured box. I'm also planning on swapping the pump as well since its approaching 80K and starting to whine.
I was kinda looking for maybe a HD Box for off road use, if there is such an animal available. |

Two questions ... OK ... actually, more than two:
1) Are the steering boxes the same as those made for the F250 & F350? If so, can you use one of them? I've never dealt with this issue myself, so I do not know if new units are available for the other SuperDuty models.
2) What's been wrong with your steering box to start with? Why did you need to replace it? |

I have had the same problem. I replaced my steering box and flushed system. After reading someones posting about the recommendation of replacing the pump when the gear box is replaced, I am going to replace the pump as well. Also, replace the hoses and install an in-line filter.
NAPA sells remanufactured boxes for $217.00. A pump is $73.00.
Good luck

I need to step up and ask a dumb ?
What makes you think the box is bad?
I have a hard time turning the front tires stationary, i need to move in order to turn
I always thought the size of tire and weight of truck was to blame, but now you have me thinking I have other issues? |

It's never a good idea to turn the front wheels while sitting still. That puts a lot of stress on more than just your suspension & steering components, it's also hard on the tires ... especially with the weight of these things. I've long made it a habit to only turn the steering wheel while rolling, regardless of what 4-wheeler I'm driving. Now the motorcycle? Different story and a whole lot less weight. |

Hi
Just a follow up on the AGR Rock Ram steering system I installed:
WOW! what a difference!
The steering is now effortless, tracks nice and straight, and no wandering! I also had the vehicle re-aligned and increased the Caster to nearly 5 degrees positive to get some of the road feel back.
On a scale of 1-10 for this project being a good DIY project I would rate it as a 7 for difficulty. The install required some specialized tools, ( PS pump pulley removal puller, Pitman arm puller, tie rod end separator, cut-off tool and 1/2" power drill & 5/8" bit). the overall install was very easy, the "plumbing" was the most challenging. The kit utilizes a GM systle high out put pump, thus the OEM pump bracket modifications, and some tricky bending of the Pressure line and return line. The Hydraulically fed steering stabilizer also posed some challenges in routing the lines. Care had to be taken to support the lines without any contact with the vehicle's frame, engine, suspension components , and steering linkage, all had to be done in concert with the movement of the axle and not to cause damage to the lines.
If I was to do it all over again I don't think I would opt for the "Live" steering stabilizer, it makes the Ex turn "Too Easy" with standard size tires, if I was putting a set of 33's on it there would be no question on putting it on, but with the standard set up it is overkill.
