Great install article. I read it today, although I installed two red-top Optimas in my 01 2wd PSD Excursion yesterday. I actually modified the plastic cover on the drivers-side battery, but was unsuccessful at getting a decent fit. Isn't that plastic cover part of the cold-air intake? Could it cause any problems to just leave it off?
Thanks,
Curtis

I did my Optimas at the same time I did the aftermarket air intake. I remember being glad that I did them both at the same time because the Optimas being significantly smaller than the stock batteries, didn't really fit at all on the driver's side in that strange plastic contraption. I personally wouldn't worry a whole lot about it but I have no data to support whether or not it'd be a bad thing. Theoretically, you're getting more air coming in the intake from the engine compartment without the box properly sealed with the OEM battery. On that note, I'm not sure that it provided the best insulation against engine heat anyway. It's only plastic. Pure speculation...

I put a pair of red tops in my 2000 X PSD last year. After 8 months they started failing to start my engine even in warm weather. After three failures in two months I dumped 'um (actually I went to the Ford dealer had them check the charging system and had them remove them and replace them with Ford recommended batteries). Since then no problems. There's a reason you won't find them in the Optima battery selector for Ford 7.3 liter diesel. Optima? Never again in my PSD X. |

I've been through quite a few batteries in my truck, for stereo reasons and I haven't been all to impressed with the Optima or their warranty dept.
