Ok so we drove to Oregon for vacation from California... Everything was fine until the trip home.
I noticed about two hours from home when we stopped to eat that I could feel something stange under my feet and heard some kind of noise also... It only happened a few times as I was stopping and going.... I didn't notice the noise after I got on the freeway again.... Everything seemed fine until I got off the freeway again.... This time though, the transmission was taking forever to shift and when it did, it was very rough going into gear. Mostly into first and last gear. We got back onto the freeway and made it home but then the overdrive "off" started blinking which I know is related to a transmission malfunction.... But can someone tell me what kind of transmission malfunction this sounds like? Is it something we can fix on our own or am I forced to have to go to a dealer?
I'm beginning to think the ford transmissions all suck.... This happened last time we went to Oregon in our Towncar but that went completely out
By the way, it's a 2001 V10 Gas Excursion... It only has 50,000 miles on it.... bought it used last year so no warranty....
Any help will be appreciated..... Thanks.

You may not need to go to the dealer. When the light started blinking it set a trouble code that is stored in the PCM. Get that code read at a local autoparts store or your favorite independant mechanic.

It is from that code that you can begin to track down the cause. While you're at it, you might as well get the fluid changed. It probably hasn't been changed yet. But needs to be every 30K.

How can I determine what the codes mean? Thanks again.

Most new code readers will also give you the meaning of the code. X Ray series readers gives you the code and the meaning . Good luck.

Because yours is an 01, I will get more worried. Fraud Motor Company decided to go with a diode for a brief period of time. In my case, I had no problems. Suddenly, after coming to a stop, the truck felt funny and would only go up to 2 and then not upshift. Took me a few minutes to pull over safely but that was enough to toast the clutches because the local temp was over 200 deg while the overall temp by the gauge was under 200. IOW some spots in the trans heated up way beyond and burnt the trans. Your best bet is to call BTS. They described the symptoms to me before I told them what happened after doing an autopsy of the trans.

I shall relay my own personal experience. I also have an 01 V-10--marvelous piece of machinery. On our way back from Orlando and the Champs Citrus Bowl to South Carolina-I pulled off at an exit for a break. My son and I were shocked to hear what sounded like metal thrown in the transmission. We stopped and filled up--took our last potty break and made for home--another 21/2 hours with no stops. I went down the entrance ramp to 95 and the X went into third and was quiet as a mouse..apparently ford transmissions are set up to attempt to go to the next gear if it cannot shift into the next one in sequence, Anyway, the y tore it down and showed me the clutch gear or whatever the terminology-had a crack running down the center. It did not split completely but when it went out of balance, a bunch of teeth of the gear headed to the pan. That was at 72K and I have the extended warranty. In retrospect, the only thing I noticed was a couple of odd shifts on the way down. My advice, take it to a pro. My understanding was that it would have cost me $3k for the job I got which was an actual replacement.

FireFoxxy,
Before you have a reman Ford tranny put in check with some of the rebuild shops. Yo can get your tranny rebuilt and upgraded for less than the Ford Stock tranny installed. I have a 7.3 with a few mods and had my tranny "Built for a Bus" and installed for under $2,500.00.
Best of luck to you!

I would definitely look into aftermarket trannies that offer a longer warranty (and more HP) than a Ford reman. I went with a Ford reman out of pure necessity to get my X back on the road when the trans died at 87k. If I were to do it all again, I'd find a local shop to install it and would have an aftermarket rebuilt tranny installed with a better warranty and something capable of handling a chip.

I have the BTS trans. From what I have heard, he offers a 2 yr unlimited warranty and still takes care of you way after the warranty is expired.

Ouch, so I should already be considering another transmission? I looked at the date as far as the diode goes and I think mine is safe from that, my date is 4/1/01 which should have been after Ford reverted back to the old way of doing it.
I bought an expensive code reader but unfortunately can't get the X to save a code to the memory anymore.... The overdrive "off" button flashed until the truck was shut off and hasn't done it since.... but the X still shifts rough, albeit does still shift into every gear, just roughly and delayed.
Should I go ahead and change the fluid and filter? What about it being a shift sensor? And if it is a shift sensor, is this something I could do myself, which one would I need? Thanks for all the help everyone
