Is there someone who can run the VIN and tell me if it was one of the "bad" one I keep hearing about? It is a 6.0. Also, did ALL 6.0's come with the Torqshift trans?
My main reason for buying an X is that I am 7' tall, my 17 year old son is 6'8" and my wife and daughter are both 6'2". WE NEED THE SPACE!!!

Welcome aboard!

Yes, all 6.0's came with the Torqshift transmission. '03 had a mix of 7.3L/4R100 Excursions and 6.0L/Torqshift Excursions. Being a lowly 7.3L owner, I don't know the magical date for when the '03s were considered "better." I know basically to stay away from the earlier models as they were prone to problems. Hopefully one of the other 6.0L members can chime in.

You should have legroom -- however anybody riding shotgun in the Excursion will be a bit cramped. The transmission (at least in my 7.3L) takes up a lot of leg room on the passenger side.

Welcome 03EBX,
Carfax.com will run the VIN # for you and give you a history of the vehicle for around $20. Check here http://www.carfax.com/. As for things to look for, regularly scheduled maintenance- fluid changes, tire rotation, filter changes. Look for even wear on tire treads. Check for signs of fluid leaking- in the engine compartment especially around the turbo pedistal. The '03 models was when Ford switched from the 7.3 to the 6.0L engine and they had their fair share of problems. If you don't feel comfortable with what you are being told about the vehicle, have an independent mechanic look it over before you buy. Good Luck. Let us know how it turns out for you

Can Iyou tell me what production dates I should stay away from?
Also, were the problems fixable through software fixes and/or dealer repairs and are/would they be factory required (meaning free or cheap) recall TSBs?

I've got a late 2003 EB X 4x4, 6.0l PSD. It's one of the early 6.0l engines, and you can check out my posts about engine hiccups while towing. I've now got a new turbo, EGR, and software, and it's like a totally different truck. Better throttle response, better towing, better shifting, but crappier highway mpg. No problems towing a big trailer cross the continent and back (15,000 km trip).

So it seems the problems can be fixed, but make darn sure there is plenty of engine warranty left, and a good diesel tech at the local Ford dealer (not all Ford dealers have certified diesel techs, let alone good ones).

The thing drove like an old-school slug bucket with siezed suspension until I added a Hellwig anti-sway bar, Radius Rods, and Ride-Rite air bags (for the big trailer). So expect a crappy wandering ride unless it's got the mods.
