All,
There are a number of DIY and retail installed systems. Keep in mind:
1 - The Excursion "anti-theft" system consists of an RFID chipped key (or keys).
2 - If you want a security system that is one thing.
3 - If you want a remote start system that is yet another.
I was looking to find an integrated solution and there are a number. If you get a security system but not a remote start, or the reverse, and then want the other; you will pay more long-term. Said another way, an integrated system costs more than one or the other but it is cheaper than both added at different times.
DEI makes a number of higher end security systems (Clifford, Viper, etc.) and they offer some of them with remote start. I had a Viper 871XP installed, which integrates a box with a wire coil inside where they secret one of the chipped keys for the remote start feature to work and it has some really fabulous programming options. Just to mention three of them are:
1 - The ability to define how long you want the remote start to run (12/24/60 minutes).
2 - The ability to define how many seconds you want the glow plug to warm before it cranks.
3 - The ability to program a "turbo cool down" feature to keep the vehicle running when you turn it off so that the turbocharger can cool down. The kit at Circuit City is ~$380 (plus tax) installed.
There are a lot of other options for this system, both hardware and simple programming choices. This system is a bit pricier because it is "two-way" in order for you to get feedback on the key fob.
There are also lots of other systems out there. I just wanted to follow up on this thread in hopes of perhaps saving someone from making the mistake I nearly made by having one but not the other installed when I knew full well I wanted both.
Regards,
Phil |
