Hello All, I have a diesel Ford Excursion (2001) about 3 weeks ago i just had a ford dealer install its 3rd transmission. I purchased the Excursion new first transmission died at 90k miles and the 2nd died at 135k miles. I'm quite disgusted with constant replacement, and its cost. I however found out that ford remanufactured transmissions and engines now have a 70k warranty vs the earlier 32k warranty. While this is an improvement it is after the fact.
Does anyone know why they fail? I have heard about installing larger aftermarket transmission coolers - is this a solution? Is there a better transmission out there to use? Should i have a temperature gage installed to moniter the transmission temperatures.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you, |

In the stock 4R100 transmission they generate alot of heat and one way to help lower the temps is by upgrading the stock fluid cooler to the V10 cooler as it's quite larger or purchase one used in the 6.0L Powerstroke trucks as they're the largest and basically bolt in with some adapting of the fluid lines.
Secondly upgrade the valve body to one such as the Factory Tech Valve Body (FTVB) which will benny lower fluid temps and more positive shifts in between gears.
Doing those two upgrades will extend the life of transmission and make driving the truck alot more enjoyable.

Interesting-my V10 transmission failed at exactly 87K. One of the clutch plates had a vertical crack--the rest was noisy! |

I've got the trans cooler out of my 2000 Ex V10 that I could sell if someone needed one. I swapped everything out for a cummins engine so I have alot of parts laying around.
