Here's something I'd LOVE to see and would buy it right away. It's great that Diablo etc makes a controller to add 40 or 80 horsepower with a " a flick of a switch".
How about an additional setting that would make the controller/chip pay for itself ? An economy setting would be great for those times when we're not towing, have a minimal load and all we want is a nice steady 65 or 70 mph cruise with an extra 2 or maybe 5 mpg?
Is this possible? I'm sure Ford has the fuel/boost/injection duration all set so the Powerstroke can tow it's max quoted load. The capability to overide that and save on diesel would be terrific. Of course, I would switch back to the stock setting for towing or hilly country but a lot of my solo driving is on flat ground and 65mph. The best mpg I usually get is 21 - I'd go nuts over 23 or more.
How about the rest of you Powerstroke Excursion guys???
I know t the old Chevy Suburbans with the Detroit diesels could get around the 25 mark. Tthe brick-like aerodynamics are the same as our Excursions so that's not the limiting factor. Part of the better economy is due to the early non-turbo diesels not making anywhere near as much power and yeah, they were dogs as far as power. I have a feeling an '02 7.3 Exc 4wd like mine has to be able to eke out a couple more mpg with programming mods. Whatta' ya' think guys???? |

You're not going to be able to acheive great higher numbers alone with a programmer.
I suggest an aftermarket 4" exhaust system,an upgraded air intake system such as an AFE stage II or a Tymar style intake which will set you back $20-$50. There's various affordable coolant/fuel/air modifications that can be done as well in your driveway.

I've made mass mods that have produced performance but the fuel mileage is gained for me by lighter shoes and for shure gearing. I have perfected my converter lock with a micro switch on the brake peddle. With the rpm's kept low I have seen 1.8 mpg. For me it is all about the right foot, can't help myself. |
