If the environmentalist granola-head misinformed tree-hugging Gore-sponsoring (not that there's anything wrong with that) folks are getting on your case, or you're running short of time to cruise the parking lot looking for a block of 3 spots to occupy, or exceeding the pre-authorization limit on your credit card when filling up is getting you down, or listening to a Cummins fire up after 0.1 seconds on the starter leaves you coveting, may I humbly suggest the following remedy:
1. Ask the environmentalist folks if they know of a more efficient vehicle to get 8 of them, their gear, and their load of chains and shackles to their nearest logging protest.
2. Compare fuel economy with any full-sized gas van, pickup, Expedition, GM Yukon, Toyota Sequoia, and even the new little Toyota FJCruiser. Smile when you realize you've got 'em beat with a bigger, more capable, and at least equally efficient vehicle. And that's even before hooking up a tow load. Imagine the giant sucking sound when lesser gas vehicles are actually pulling something.
3. Check out prices for any SUV's on the market today. Smile knowing that smaller, weaker, replacements can cost well over $50k.
4. For those in snow country, enjoy the safety and reliability of getting around after a good dump of snow. Pick up people stuck at the airport or ferry terminal, and pull out a few people hopelessly stuck on the side (or in the middle!) of the road. Take the little old ladies next door out for groceries. Notice how the only people getting anywhere have power to both front & back wheels.
Ok, I feel better now. |

Try yelling at the wall. You get the same results. Why bother with the effort to convince.?
Heard of the prayer of serenity?
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
To change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

I laugh when I see people in their "fuel efficient" cars as they travel through Virginia. Most, if not all, have some type of roof carrier or rack that hold all the crap that they couldn't fit in the car. Putting anything on your roof will hyur fuel mileage.
You also see people cramped in the car. How comfotable that must be when you are long distance traveling.
I am driving along in my X with all the room in the world for my family and luggage, decent fuel mileage and the satisfaction knowing that I will fare better in a accident than one of those smaller cars.

It has been a love/hate relationship with my X this year.
I currently HATE it because:
- our concrete driveway has pretty little oil spots all over thanks to a mystery oil leak
- to compliment the oil spots, it now leaks coolant which makes for a very artistic-looking driveway stain
- the batteries, after a cushy 20k miles, are gonners
- the front leaf springs have about 1/4" of clearance from the bumpstops
- the passenger-rear shock has broken top mounting bolts again (thus only 1 functioning shock in the rear)
Granted, I could fix these things...but I'd rather drive the new Mustang. I guess that'll teach the X to get on my bad side.

When we had a pad added to make our driveway 3 lanes wide, the new concrete did not have a very light red dye mixed in like the other 2 lanes. I'm thinking of thinly spreading some metal filings (I got lots of those!) on the new surface, and let it rust-stain it. The hard part will be how to meter the amount of filings so I don't get the new pad looking too dark. Then again, I could just spread 'em over the whole driveway. |
