My local tire dealer turned down an alignment telling me my 48K mile 2003 needs ball joints. From what I'ver read this is way too early for a stock X that has never been off-road. I do have a cupping pattern on my front tires but these were on prior to my switching to ART rotors.

Any thoughts?

I'd put the front end up on jack stands and check to see if there's any ball joint play to rule out "needing" ball joints. You may just need an alignment and or check your tire pressure/balance which can make a difference when it comes to cupping.

Some tires while cup more than others as well. I had BFG TKO's which were constant balance probs and cupped frequently then we went with the Michelin LTX tires which have zero cupping and require near no balance weight adjustments.

I know this may have not much to do with your current issue but are you still running with the stock shock absorbers?

Mark,

This is an easy thing to check. As Bill mentioned, jack up the front end and grab the top and bottom of the tire and try to wiggle it top-to-bottom.

Here's a video of what bad ball joints will be like (this was on my Excursion after 130,000 miles):

Here's complete video on the ball-joint swap as well (broken down by steps):

48K is really way too soon to need new ball joints. I assume you are also running stock tire size?

My 01 EX needed ball joints at 51K. The Ford engineers have seen fit not to put grease certs for regular squirts to avoid this problem. But what can you expect from a company that decided not to keep building the EX.
