Hi Folks,
Last week I was "lucky" enough to have the starter on my 2001 PSD die on me. Turned the key and the starter spun, but did not engage. When I turned off the key, the starter motor kept turning, for about three minutes! All things considered, I got off pretty lucky. It happened only about a mile from home, and the weather wasn't too much of an issue. Got it home by towing the truck with my friend's Tahoe.
I pulled off the old starter after I got home from work Wednesday evening, and planned on installing the new one the next morning. Since the weather was on the cold side overnight, I plugged in the block heater so that I wouldn't be working on an ice cold hunk of iron. That worked out pretty well. When I got out there to start on it in the morning, the temperature was a brisk 29 degrees outside. Just out of curiosity, I pointed my infrared thermometer at the oil pan while I was under the truck. The oil pan read at 58 degrees, and the upper part of the engine, read from above on the drivers side, showed up as a toasty 81 degrees. Guess that block heater really does work!

What a great tip! Don't think I'll ever use since 1. I don't have a block heater and 2. I live in Hawaii but that's a great idea! Hope others take your advice when working on their trucks in the winter.

Good idea, when it hits 29 here it will feel like spring. Last week my wife pulled out of the garage with block heater still plugged in. Luckily the end of the extension cord caught behind the fog light and pulled the end of cord off and left the block heater cord intact. I found the heavy duty timer buried in snow. |

Hahahahahahaa!! That sounds like exactly something my wife would do.

Is there away to heat the transmission, I was let the engine run awhile before I pullout. It was a cool -1 degree this morning as I went out to start the Ex, and was wondering. It would save from have to let the truck warm up so long on these cold winter mornings. Just me thinking.
BTW - the wife says I think too much.

On cold mornings I start her up and when I'm in the X, I put the trans in neutral for a few minutes to get the fluid to cycle through and warm up. That's all I've ever done, though there may be a heater out there somewhere.
